From Hawaii Tattoo Styles With Love: Biomechanical Tattoos

Our Waikiki Tattoo studio has a team of tattooists with years of experience (Tattoo Adam‘s been in the game for nearly two decades), celebrity clientele (Adam’s tattooed Mike Tyson, members of the Chicago Blackhawks, other Pro Sports figures and Marko Livingston‘s inked Rapper T-Pain), and they can do a little bit of everything from tattoo flash to custom tattooing styles, you’ll find what you’re looking for and more.

Including a bit of history…

This writer was curious about how the biomechanical tattoo style made it into tattooing.  Tattoo Adam did not disappoint as he pointed out a book on the shelf by Swiss artist, H.R. Giger, “That’s the guy.” He told me one day while he set up for another appointment.  Note: If you ever meet Tattoo Adam or have met him already you can see the biomechanical work he has had done on himself.

To satisfy the Cliff Notes mentality, biomechanical art is described courtesy of Wikipedia as:

“a surrealistic style of art that combines elements of machines with organics[1]. Rendered with distinct realism, biomechanical art expresses an internal fantasy world, most typically represented with human or animal anatomy where bones and joints are replaced with metal pistons and gears, but infused with muscles and tendons.”

Giger was tasked with developing the concepts and designs for the creatures from Alien.  That movie went on to become a smash success and Giger’s Necromonicon would become a hit in and of itself.  You can find all types of his sculptures for sale online and his books in shops all around.

You can check Tattoo Adam’s tattoos live and in the flesh at our Honolulu Tattoo studio, 434 Tattoo.  We’re open seven days a week from 10a-10p.  Stop on by for a free consultation and to find out about any deals we have going on.  Currently, tattooist Andy Burley is doing $50 off an hour, a Hawaii Tattoo deal you don’t want to miss.

See you in the shop!

Our Waikiki Tattoo parlor, 434 Tattoo, has taken part in offering a number of Hawaii Tattoo Discounts over the years.  In last year alone, our Honolulu tattoo shop has done a Military Appreciation Month in Hawaii, offered discounts to Federal Agents, and has even been featured as one of the daily deals by Groupon!

To help people who may be feeling down because of the Ides of March, Andy is offering $50 off his hourly rate through the middle of March.  That’s a huge tattoo savings in Hawaii and a great opportunity to get some work done by the only tattooist to make it through an apprenticeship with Tattoo Adam, Shop Owner, a world-renowned Tattoo Artist who has tattooed for almost two decades, and even tattooed the infamous “Iron” Mike Tyson.

SB 2398: The Aftermath

Dr. Dre had his aftermath and so does SB 2398, Relating to Tattoo Artists.  This past Wednesday, Tattoo Adam went down to the Hawaii State Legislature, took part in the political process and testified in opposition of the Senate Bill, which proposed for the State Department of Health of Hawaii to contract out for temporary tattoo licenses to out of state tattoo artists in the event of a convention.

Many may misconstrue what our Waikiki tattoo shop Leader was doing.  Like why would Tattoo Adam testify against a bill that is seemingly about a convention?

Truth be told, Tattoo Adam is pro-convention, and his hands were tied because he wasn’t in support of the Department of Health possibly contracting to online services and schools, which are not up to par with the standards that many of the tattooists in the industry are held to.  If that Bill went through, it opened the door for people who bought kits on EBay and passed a test to come in and tattoo our people.  Not cool, so he had to do a little something about that.  And more people should to because poorly crafted policy like that gets passed at every level of government each and every year, impacting all of our people.

And in the case of that bill, it wasn’t fair to our Hawaii tattoo artists, who pay taxes here and have to wait the full time to take the test and be licensed.  At any rate, the ill bill was killed by the Joint Senate Committees.

So let’s get on with a cool ass legit convention, eh!!!

Hawaii Tattoo: Relating to Tattoo Artists

It’s that time of year again, where the 25 Senators and 51 Representatives of the Hawaii State Legislature hui it up and find ways to shake and bake the Hawaii Revised Statutes based on information (or who who knows maybe some misinformation) they receive from lobbyists, the various City and County and State entities, and last but at times treated like least, the public.

The Hawaii State Legislative Session is officially 60 days long, with recess days making it span a little over/around four months.  Alot can happen in that small period of time, some good, and unfortunately, some things can slip through the cracks.

In 2009, the Coalition for Safe Tattooing in Hawai’i, including members such as long-time Hawaii tattooist and tattoo shop owner, Peggy Sucher, Trisha Allen, and Tattoo Adam, of our very own Waikiki Tattoo Shop, 434 Tattoo, polled over 100 local tattoo shops and determined that a cap of 40 artists would be ideal for a convention.

This year, there is a Senate Bill in particular, SB 2398, Relating to Tattoo Artists, that is making some waves amongst the Hawaii tattoo community here in Hawaii because of what it addresses.  It has also opened some old wounds in that we’ve learned there are unfortunately some loopholes out there regarding conventions in Hawaii.

While SB 2398 addresses licensing, an idea out there is to use it as a vehicle to insert an amendment to the law so that people don’t slip through the loophole and we end up with a convention that has too many artists.  While we are pro-tattoo, we are more pro-health and crowding a convention with too many artists would not be sanitary.

Stay tuned and get involved in the issues you care about!  You can submit testimony for this Bill here.

Tattoo PSA: Importance of Getting Tattooed Professionally

At our Oahu Tattoo shop, 434 Tattoo, all of our Hawaii tattooists are certified and undergo training in order to tattoo you.  We do this because we strive to provide the best service and to ensure that you get the best product out there!

In life, many people try to cut corners for a variety of reasons and tattooing is no exception.  While you might save some money or help a buddy practice, it’s better to be safe than sorry.  In a recent article, Reuters reported that Amateur tattoos may carry a higher risk of Hepatitis C infection.  Another common side effect of amateur tattooing, is improper after-care which leads to an infection, and in some cases a hospital visit.

So while we are in the tattoo industry and don’t refute our bad-assness, we also want to make sure people are educated about this art that we love and take the best care of themselves.

This Tattoo Public Service Announcement has been brought to you by Friends of Tattoo Adam 2012!  Check out our award-winning Honolulu Custom Tattooing shop three years running at 434 Ena Rd.  We’re open everyday from 10a-10p!

A Story Told in Ink: Time to Doubledown

“Karl, so are you called Tattoo Karl?”  I ask.

“Nah.” Karl Juthans replies.

“They call me Doubledown since back when I worked on the boat…” He says in reference to his days working on the cruises off the famous Waikiki Beach.

Born and raised in Comox Valley of Vancouver Island, Doubledown, knew early on that he wanted to be a custom tattoo artist and especially after meeting Tattoo Adam, owner of the award-winning Honolulu Tattoo Studio, 434 Tattoo.  He had been getting tattooed all over the world after getting his first tattoo upon turning the age of 18 while in New Zealand.  “Over half of my body was covered in tattoos and one day, Adam told me that there are two types of people who get as many tattoos as you, avid collectors or artists.  That’s sort of when I knew…”  Doubledown shares.

He has been a part of the Oahu tattoo Shop, 434 Tattoo, in many different capacities since 2008, got licensed in June 2011, and began his full-time apprenticeship this year.

Tattoo Adam, who has only had one other person run the gauntlet of an apprenticeship with him, has taught Doubledown every facet of tattooing in the really old school way from building needles, how to make ink from scratch, and more, all before his first tattoo.

“I thought that was pretty cool, you know, it wasn’t just getting a kit off E-Bay or something, it was about knowing the right way to do it.”  Doubledown shares.

“He’s been around the shop and helping out for a long time.”  Adam adds.

Doubledown completed his first tattoo the first week of of this year and has been doing around 3 or more tattoos a week since then. With the kind of teaching he’s getting, it’s only a matter of time before he’s tattooing 3 or more tattoos a day.

“Only guy I ever drank so much with, I blanked out… and I never blank out.”  Adam says, putting a close to this story.

You can find Doubledown and his work online at Doubledown Tats on Facebook and doubledownhawaii on Instagr.am.

A Story Told in Ink: Are you ready?

“Are you ready?” Tattoo Adam asks me as I lay face down on the table.  I wasn’t expecting to get the custom tiger tattoo stencil in our Waikiki Tattoo Studio that day, I thought I was just going to be seeing it.  Somewhat of a whirlwind later, there I am, face down on the table, a giant tiger about to be put on my back.  And I find myself asking the question that I have asked over and over again: what am I doing with my life?

And what a whirlwind it’s been.  The first tattoo I ever wanted was a tiger going across the top of my back.  This was when I was 20 or 21.  I wouldn’t get my first tattoo until I was 30 because I went into the “professional world” and mingled in politics and all types of things and services because I thought life was all about helping and serving others.  Before I knew it, my 20’s were over as was a large portion of the rest of my life because of some events that were beyond my control, but it seems, that Life was saying, JMAW, you’re ready.  But ready for what, right?

I was always interested in the Spiritual realm and each tattoo I have has a story, tells something about my spiritual journey up until this point and I’m guessing will continue to do so throughout my life.

I hear the buzz of the machine, it’s hypnotic, but as I lay there, I was asking myself what am I doing because I don’t if I’m ready…  But before I can answer the questions, I feel the burning sensation of the needle.

Sensations shoot throughout my body, wondering what I’m doing and why I’m doing it.  I recalled last summer, meditating and seeing a tiger come out of a cave.  I’d had a dream many years ago of entering a cave alone and all that I could see were the many eyes staring back at me. When my life went a little “off” I knew it was time to do the Inner Work, take my spiritual walk if you will, before I could go back to “business as usual” as UFC President Dana White likes to say.

So I prayed, I meditated, I learned to trust my intuition.  Each tattoo a reminder, a ritual form of healing.

“Should I talk?”  I ask, trying to distract myself from the feeling of the needle hitting the nerve endings along my spinal cord.  “No, just enjoy every minute of it…”  Adam replies.

My first tattoo was on my ribs, a reminder to live from a place of love and not fear.  I had a dream of a lion in its place that night and two more sessions later on that area adding lion tattoos, I figured, okay, I can keep doing it because it’s like that song, the first cut is the deepest you know and I chose to go really painful first in order to ease along later [I know, idiot, right?]

There were alot of other life lessons and so on mixed in but learning to go the route of living from love and not fear certainly helped in dealing with the unexpected which will surely arrive.  Kind of like this tattoo, Adam was like Life, telling me I was ready, even though I didn’t know if I was, just like that unexpected bundle of joy or whatever that shows up in our daily lives.

Because that’s it, you know?  You gotta keep moving forward through what comes because if it’s there, you’re ready for it.  At the start of each tattoo session, during, and at the conclusion, I marvel at how I know the pain won’t last, and what’s in it’s place is awesome. Just like the pain of life, when a wound heals, the scar can be a beautiful reminder.

In what was intensely long and now as I write, so far away, I realize I’m ready.  I’d had a number of dreams of a tiger crawling down my neck.  I suppose it knew it’s place all along was at my back as it exited the cave, the rabbit hole, the Matrix, the yada yada yada that my spiritual musings and meanderings have been.

And now I’m back. Not like The Terminator “I’ll be back” style but like literally, new career, new lease on life.  I’m going to appreciate this because the waves rise and fall man, and life will have more challenges and adversity in store, that’s just the nature of it…

Big Thx to Tattoo Adam and 434 Ohana for welcoming me on as the Blogger/Writer and helping me piece together elements of this crazy, wonderful journey.
