Hawaii Custom Tattoos: Tattoo Circle

20121118-171417.jpg

On Sunday, November 18, 2012, the following people came by our Hawaii Tattoo Studio to get a picture with Tattoo Adam, Arlita, Andrew, and Doubledown at 434 Tattoo.

Adam has often shared stories about Tattoo Circles, or groups who come in and get tattooed by the same artist or shop. This was the circle that kept growing and we are very grateful for having the opportunity to put custom tattoos on them and for their generosity and support.

Big Mahalo to:

Joe Norris, Chuck Taylorn, David ‘Duke,’ Ed Parchaiski, Charlie Lamon, Andrey Jordan, Jacob Clough , Andy DeLucia , John Koeppe, Lori Proulex, Ed Overaker

This crew of men and women work with Oceaneering and Electric Boat and have been here temporarily from all across the continental US and in there spare time have been getting tattoo cover ups, Polynesian tattoos, and custom tattoos!!!

What exactly do they do? Well to sum that up we went to Mr. Jordan aka Julio (but answers to Andrey, Julio, or Jordan.

Andrey: “We fix submarines, install new equipment, and fix whatever is broken. Whatever they need fixed, we do. Basically ship repair.”

Andrey is a man of few words and when asked about his Hawaii custom tattoos, he replied simply:

“I love em.”

Andrey began getting tattooed just this year and has been tattooed “23 or 24 times” since then here at 34 Tattoo, our Waikiki Tattoo Studio. His love of tattooing has been contagious and he helped so many people find us. Mahalo to Andrey and each and every one of the Oceaneering and Electric Boat crews who joined us this year and became a part of the 434 Ohana.

Remember, Remember All of November…

“Remember, remember the 5th of November.”

This quote was popularized in the movie, V for Vendetta, but we don’t want to remember just the 5th, we want to remember it all!

It’s been quite the November for our Waikiki Tattoo shop ohana at 434 Tattoo.  It began by coming off a huge October (and much thanks to all of you), which saw a Living Social Honolulu Tattoo Deal and a record number of online visits and led to a very Happy time:

the second birthday of Tattoo Adam‘s Son, Andrew!!!

(Above: The Siehr Ohana getting ready for Halloween)

This led to the celebration of Andrew’s Birthday at the famous Ala Moana Beach Park.  It was a beautiful day filled with amazing food made by Arlita and ended in one of Hawaii’s famous sunsets.

Then it was back to business as we got down with some Hawaii custom tattoos, freehand style, which you can read about here and there.  The Content Editor of this blog even had a book get published and Tattoo Adam was the first to get a copy signed.

Mahalo plenty to Adam for all the support! (You can support the Homie by leaving a comment where it is available online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Balboa Press, and more).

While you’re leaving comments…  Could you leave a comment on Yelp about 434 Tattoos?  We’d greatly appreciate that!  You might just Yelp yourself by finding a great Hawaii tattoo deal

Finally, did you know that should you choose to get married here in Hawaii, Tattoo Adam, Rev. Manny, and JMAW, can all perform weddings?  All we need is Doubdledown to get his license and we could tattoo your ring fingers and read you your wedding ceremony!

Thanks for a great November thus far!  Here’s to the second half of it being just as awesome as we roll on into the last month of the year (and maybe ever if this Mayan Prophecy holds true!).

Free Hand Custom Tattoo in Hawaii

Tattoo Adam has been in the game for over 20 years.  He got into the tattoo industry before people used the modern form of stenciling on paper and learned the old-school traditions and has worked hard to evolve as a custom tattoo artist while also not forgetting his roots.  From his early days as an apprentice in Milwaukee to having gone all over the world, including to Japan to get tattooed by and become a member of the Horioshi III family, Adam lives custom tattooing.

As tattoo artists evolve, they take on different types of challenges.  What starts out for an apprentice in helping around the shop, to taking on flash pieces, grows into custom artwork and leads to larger pieces that take up a bigger portion of body canvas.  Another skill that comes with the territory of the evolution of a tattoo artist, is taking on freehand tattooing.

Pictured above is Tattoo Adam taking the pen directly to the skin of a customer and drawing the design freehand.  The skin is very pliable and the artist does this to have a frame of reference while tattooing.

There Adam refers to what he just created and continues the tattoo layout prior to inking it. While there are many shops in Waikiki, we have been voted the best tattooing studio in Honolulu for multiple years in the Oahu Midweek and our team does not hesitate to prepare anything you want, whether it be from one of the designs on the wall or to something more unique, like one of these custom freehand tattoos.

Here we can see the outline of the this custom Asian style tattoo take shape.

And there you have the finished piece.  Adam is known for his unique custom tattooing style, which specializes in Polynesian and Hawaii custom tattoos, Asian tattoo styles, as pictured above, as well as Old-School and New-School designs.

For another view on the freehand style of tattooing, check out this video where Tattoo Adam draws directly on the skin of a customer.

Come on down and check us out at our Waikiki Tattoo studio, 434 Tattoo!  We are open every day from 10a – 10p by appointment and walk-ins are always welcome.  We offer free consultations on all pieces and even better, we love what we do!

When is the time and where is the best tattoo studio in Hawaii?

People often stop by while on vacation and ask the question:

When is the best time to get a tattoo?  It’s always a good time to get a tattoo but there are some times that are better than others, particularly if you want to take in all that the beautiful locales and weather that Hawaii has to offer.

It is important to remember that you don’t want to expose your new tattoo in the sun nor do you want to go into the ocean for at the very least, two weeks.  It takes about this long for your skin to completely heal from a new tattoo.  You are also going to want to keep sunscreen on that piece for Life, unless you want to come back for a touch-up (free for Life).  A word to the wise though, keep your tattoo young and healthy by taking care of it!

So keeping the above in mind, if you are visiting, you will want to wait until your last night or day before leaving to get those Hawaii custom tattoos.

And to answer your second question:

Where is the best tattoo studio in Hawaii?

Well, here at our Waikiki Tattoo Parlor of course!  Our team has decades of experience and over the last four years have been voted The Best Honolulu Custom Tattooing Studio.

434 Tattoo is sanctioned by the State of Hawaii Department of Health and has a track record of providing quality service to people from around the world.  We offer free consultations prior to any tattoo and are available by appointment with walk-ins also welcome!  Hope to see you at the best place for Honolulu custom tattoos!

WTF America

It is not quite Wednesday as of this writing in Hawaii, and on Wednesday we do a WTF Wednesday but since there was a big event recently in the US, we have WTF America on our tattoo blog.

Today, President Barack Obama won his 2nd term as President of the United States in a hard fought, at times bitter battle against Republican challenger, Governor Mitt Romney, or Mitt Zero Money as the spellcheck on this Word Press app auto-corrected, which is super funny if you consider the fact that Romney is like kazillionaire or something.

Like seriously, WTF? Did we really think some Dude with that much money was going to relate to the common man?

But that is not why we’re writing.

That is not the reason for this blog. The reason for this blog is the devastation that the super storm Hurricane Sandy caused to those living on the Eastern Seaboard of the US and has left NYC beat up again, much like in the comic books. Years ago, NYC, was struck during 9/11, an act of man, this time years later by an act of Nature. In that time, our oil dependence and reliance on traditional energy forms has only grown. Tough efforts have been made to change and is slowly crawling along but let us not be caught with our pants down once again, because whether it’s man, Nature, or something else, ‘shite,’ as they say in Scotland, happens.

So hopefully we can grow and become more peace loving and Rastafarian like Tattoo Adam, the owner of our Waikiki Tattoo parlor, 434 Tattoo, puts it. Or maybe we can learn a few lessons from our brothers and sisters up North in Canada, the homeland of our Hawaii tattooist Doubledown.

In the meanwhile, for some non-partisan BS, come on down to our Hawaii custom tattoos‘ sanctuary in Honolulu. You won’t regret it!

Polynesian Tattoo Lecture

Next Thursday, November 15, 2012, Windward Community College will be hosting a presentation entitled as:

Tattoo Traditions of Polynesia

This event will run from 1100a – 100p and cover the Polynesian tattoo history of each of the primary Polynesian islands including Samoa, Tonga, the Society Islands, Aotearoa, the Marquesas, Rapa Nui, and Hawaii.

This would be a great opportunity to get more in depth information behind the history and meaning of the tattoos in Polynesia. At our Waikiki Tattoo Studio we specialize in a variety of Hawaii Custom Tattoos including Polynesian tattoos! While you can ask us your questions and we are more than happy to help, this rare opportunity would be great for those who want to go into more detail from some of the top researchers in the academic arena.

We are open 7 days a week, from 10a-10p, and all consultations are free. You only pay for your ink! Stop by Honolulu’s Best Tattoo Parlor (four years awarded and counting) and get inked by our experienced, talented, and professional crew.

How big is Oahu? How big is your Tattoo?

Many visitors don’t realize the size of the islands, on a map it is but a speck, but when you arrive in Honolulu, you are greeted by a mix of the island feel and a growing and densely populated city.  As people are living longer, more cars and being produced, and more businesses and happenings coming to life, it’s easy for it to get a little crowded, even though this is ‘supposed’ to be a small place.

It is kind of like custom tattooing.  You start off with one piece and before you know it, you are wondering what area of canvas you can fit the one idea you’re really loving.  Let’s learn a few lessons from the planning of constructing this city and apply those lessons to your tattooing.

1. Do you really want it/Are you going to want it later?

Hawaii invested tons of money in the Super Ferry a few years back.  The same as it is pouring money into rail.  Super Ferry faced incredible opposition the same as Rail is facing today.  What we’re left with Super Ferry are memories and nothing else.  I guess in the case of Super Ferry we were able to pull off a cover-up but with the Rail construction underway, we could end up with partially completed projects speckling the canvas of the island.

The same can be applied with your tattoos.  Think ahead, though it is impossible to know who or what you will be like 10-20 years from now, it is good practice to get something meaningful that will last and stand the test of time.
2.  What else is going to grow/what about traffic gridlock?

On Oahu, the planners, bless their Souls, didn’t anticipate Oahu to grow in the fashion it has and as a result, the infrastructure here is not in place to handle the volume of drivers and cars on the road.  You can say that it is quite congested, especially during rush-hour times.

The same thing can happen with any unique tattoo you decide.  Sure it is awesome and it works but is it going to fit later?  For example, that lucky shamrock tattoo on your forearm when you already started a upper half-sleeve Polynesian tattoo might present a challenge when you go full-sleeve (and you will…).

Feel free to stop by 434 tattoo, the best in Hawaii custom tattoos, our Waikiki Tattoo studio is a multiple award winning establishment and we strive in helping you put together a piece that will last and help you to expand should your tattoo collection grow!
