We left off the last addition of The Life and Times of Custom Tattoo Artist Tattoo Adam in Okinawa where the weather is a bit similar to Hawaii. We also have never shied away from talking about the Yakuza in the past. This addition to the series takes on a change of scenery in and continues to share some experiences with the Yakuza…

Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride as you learn more about the history behind our Honolulu Tattoo shop!

It all began when asked if European tattoo styles differ, Adam shared that they are a bit traditional and old school in style and popularity. This led the conversation to Amsterdam, where Adam shared his visit to the Hanky Panky Tattoo Shop. The tattoo fun in Amsterdam doesn’t stop with the shop…

Hanky Panky, named after owner Henk ‘Hanky Panky’ Schiffmacher, also has a Tattoo Museum in Amsterdam featuring tattoo memorabilia collected over the career of Henk. Google rumor has it that Pop Star Lady Gaga got a tattoo at the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum from Hanky Panky himself…

We mentioned last go around the infamous Yakuza. Yakuza tattoos are quite the thing in pop culture and gangster lore due to the rich history of the organization and its ties throughout the world. Well if you visit Hanky Panky’s, you get to see a small piece of it up close and personal.

“They had a finger in a jar on display!” Somehow Henk acquired a finger from someone affiliated with the Yakuza. The cutting of fingers usually had to do with a form of payment, each knucle and joint worth a certain amount of money, and it was also to show a loss of face when someone messed up. The removal of fingers paid the debt.

Adam also took the time to take in the sights, sounds, and smells of Amsterdam during his Journey there. You can Learn more about the museum here.
