Sailor Jerry Tattoos

One of the most famous Tattoo Artists of all time is Sailor Jerry.  Not enough can be said about what he was doing at the time and how it has impacted generations since and style since.

While his iconic work is worn by countless people who chose the design from tattoo flash off the wall, rarely does one get to see an actual piece done by the man himself these days.  Until now…

Steven V.’s custom tiger tattoo by Sailor Jerry, was done 40 years ago in Chinatown of Honolulu Hawaii.  Sailor Jerry is not only one of the most famous tattoo artists of all time, it’s also one of the most famous Hawaii Tattoo Artists of all time, and his shop was in the Chinatown area at that time.
Steve was 15 at the time and this tattoo has stood the test of time, still looking good 4 decades later.

Flashback Fun Fact: For sale in Chinatown at the time was elephant weed joints laced with opium.

Thanks for stopping by Steve!  If anyone else wants to roll through and show us a piece by a legend, please do!  Better yet, come get tattooed by one of our team led by Tattoo Adam, who has been tattooing for nearly 22 years.  In 40 years, you can compare notes with others who’ve been tattooed by Adam and the artists here at our Waikiki Tattoo studio, 434 Tattoo!

See ya soon!

Colin Kaepernick’s Tattoos

The San Francisco 49er’s Quarterback Colin Kaepernick made waves for many reasons last year.  The signal caller usurped former number draft pick Alex Smith for the starting job mid-season last year when Smith went down with an injury and never looked back, leading the 49er’s within a breath of the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.

Colin Kaepernick’s tattoos have also made waves in the media since his days at the University of Nevada and he’s not looking back with them either, getting more ink by the season, and not caring about what people think about his tattoos.

Kaepernick, who recently posed in ESPN’s somewhat controversial body issue put his tattoos on display and painted an even bigger target on his back this season among opposing player’s and including some teammates, upset over his wearing a Miami Dolphins cap a few weeks back, and not understanding his choice to go nude in ESPN’s magazine.

Kapernick’s tattoo artist Nes Andrion is enjoying his client’s newfound fame and has been inking the QB since he called plays in college.

Hawaii Tattoo Artist Adam Siehr knows a thing or two himself about tattooing athletes.  Tattoo Adam’s work can be found as one of Mike Tyson’s tattoos and he has also tattooed members of Chicago Blackhawks and a host of other celebrities.

So what are you waiting for?  Roll on down and score an awesome tattoo at our Honolulu Tattoo shop!

In our last piece, we showed Tattoo Adam designing a custom tattoo stencil at his Waikiki Tattoo studio 434 Tattoo.

To give you the contrast between designing a stencil on paper and directly on the skin, check out this video we took in the past that features Tattoo Adam doing some freehand tattoo work.

434 Tattoo is open 7 days a week, rain or shine, at 434 Ena Rd. in the Ala Moana and Waikiki area of the island of Oahu.  Consultations are free and welcome.  Come on down and check us out.

We’ll be happy to ink ya!

Designing a Tattoo

Tattoo Adam, Owner and President of one of Hawaii’s best tattoo studios, the Waikiki Tattoo shop 434 Tattoo, has done just about everything that you can do in his 20 plus year career as a custom Tattoo artist.

Adam has tattooed all over the world, from sneaking onto military bases and tattooing the servicemen and women out of someone’s room in Okinawa to learning from and getting tattooed by Japanese Tattoo Legend Horiyoshi III.

Over the years he has also developed in many different styles including Old School and New School tattoos, Japanese and Asian Tattoos, and Hawaiian and Polynesian tattooing.  From time to time, Adam will freehand pieces and in this video, he take the time to develop a stencil using something he created previously and some new ideas that the customer had.

Check it out!

Body Modification in Hawaii

Tattoos are a popular form of body modification around the world and are readily accepted in Hawaii and many other cultures.  Hawaiian tattoos have a rich tradition and are a form of Polynesian tattooing that can be found in different variations throughout the Pacific.

Another form of body modification that is popular though not as common as custom tattoos is scarification.  Scarification involves the cutting, burning, and/or/all of the above etching of words, symbols, and designs into the skin of the wearer.  So how does this involve a Hawaii Custom Tattoo Shop?

Well…

434 Tattoo, our Honolulu Tattoo shop specializes in a wide variety of body art tattoo styles but we do stick to tattooing.  What many people interested in scarification do however is come through and ask for there whole arms, legs, or other areas of their bodies to be covered in a solid color of ink by a tattooist.  From there, the scarification is pursued.  Some people even go so far as to get implants inserted underneath their skin.

Expression and the human body is constantly evolving and while we appreciate and respect the different ways people choose to share their stories, meanings, and value, we’ll be more than happy to put on a tattoo or two.

Cheers!
