Japanese Tattoos by Hand in Hawaii

Long a goal of Tattoo Adam, and inspired further by his recent trip to Thailand and experiences there, Tebori and hand-poking tattoos are on the horizon for the Hawaii Custom Tattoo Shops Owner.

“Last year was a tough year and my vision for the space (pictured above) was clouded, but now I’m ready to go into it.”  Adam shares candidly, having faced some trials and tribulations in 2013.  Despite the adversity, Adam is as determined as ever to keep evolving and getting better as a custom tattoo artist.

“When I was young, I was drawn to Asian tattoos.” he continues and has often shared.  Having frequented Japan and Thailand, Adam has had the opportunity to get tattooed by and learn from such legends in traditional methods as Horiyoshi III, the Japanese tattoo master, and a number of Thai Tattoo Monks, who you can read most recently about in the Thai Tattoo Experience series.

Tebori is something I’ve always wanted to do.”  Adam says about the Japanese style of tattooing by hand.  For a cool explanation of Tebori, check out this blurb from InkArm.com:

“Tebori is the traditional Japanese style of hand tattooing. It is believed to have risen to prominence in Japan during the 18th or 19th century; as professional tattooists first appeared in the capital city of Edo. Traditionally, the process is done entirely by hand; Even the crafting of the tool took on a special significance.  Steel needles were arranged in rows, and tied to a long handle of bamboo which would rest across the thumb of the tattooist’s left hand; with the end of the handle grasped in his right.”- See more here.

Check out this recent custom tattoo completed at our tattoo studio in Waikiki!

This work was done by our Waikiki tattoo shop‘s very own, Karl Juthans.

This is not Karl’s first jump into the technique as he has been working on it for some time.  You can read up and see more of Karl’s tattoos done in this technique online here.

Tattooing with needles and by tapping was the original method of inking, prior to the invention of machines, and have a special place in the history of tattooing.

Recently 434 Tattoo shop owner, Tattoo Adam, returned from Thailand, where he was inspired by their own version of tattooing without machines.

Stay tuned to hear more about what Adam has in store there!

So concludes this part of Journey in Thailand for Tattoo Adam, Owner and President of our Hawaii Custom Tattoos establishment, 434 Tattoo.  Adam returned to the islands with “knowledge that cannot be contained in books,” the kind of teachings that one only receives when in the presence of a Master like Achan Adjan.

Adam would like to send his heartfelt gratitude and Aloha to another great teacher that he has encountered!

Come on down to our Tattoo Studio in Waikiki for custom tattoos, a piece based on Tattoo Flash, or a souvenir tattoo to commemorate your experience here in the islands!

Can’t make it to Thailand or not planning a trip soon?  No worries!  Our team of talented Hawaii Tattoo Artists love what they do and you’ll feel blessed in our shop that has positive vibes emanating from it and has in fact, been blessed by a monk itself!

We look forward to inking ya!

Aloha!

Thai Tattoo Experience Pt. 2

When we last left off, Tattoo Adam, the Leader of 434 Tattoo, our tattoo studio in Hawaii, was traversing deep in Thailand and had the good fortune of meeting a wonderful teacher!

Pictured above is Achan Adjan, a retired Thai tattoo monk with 20 years of experience, who still practices, Sak Yant, out of his dojo, or studio in Phuket.

Adam took some time during his trip to study with Achan Adjan the meanings and background of the tattoos that the retired monk did.  One of the coolest things Adam shared follows:

“It is very important to know even after 5 years of studying under your Achan it does not mean you know how to apply the magic and prayer , with out that it can fall out or what they say not stick . Even fade like my originals but you can renew the powers only by the same teacher or Achan.”

In addition to the renewal of energy by your Teacher and Thai Tattooist, you can else enhance the strength of the blessing by taking care of yourself aka limiting the usage of various vices.  Not taking care of yourself can have the opposite effect.

“Achan taught me a great deal about the basics, things you could never find in books that he has taken away from the years of his experience.  It was invaluable!”

Greetings Tattoo Lovers!

Live from the blog of our Hawaii Custom Tattoos Shop, 434 Tattoo, we bring you some awesome imagery from Thailand courtesy of Hawaii Tattoo Artist and President/Owner of our tattoo studio in Waikiki, Tattoo Adam Siehr.

Adam has been visiting Asia for years to learn more about custom tattooing techniques, get inked himself, as well as enjoy the different cultures.  In addition to Thailand, another influential area that Adam has frequented over the years includes Yokohama area of Japan, where the legendary Japanese Tattoo Master Horiyoshi III resides.

On this recent trip to Thailand, Adam was fortunate enough to meet a master of a different sort, a former Buddhist Monk!
