Tattoo Artists and Bikers: Andy and his Hog

Hawaii Tattooist Andy Burley finally did it!

He dropped the crotch rocket and got himself a Harley Davidson Motorcycle!

“Almost all tattoo artists ride Harley’s, he woke up and got one.  I respect him more and will probably get one now.”  Tattoo Adam jokes.

On the real, we’d like to congratulate Andy on the new addition to his family and say thank you for letting us ride it as well!  Tattoo Artists and Bikers have a rich history and go way back with Bikers and Motorcycle Clubs being amongst the first to own tattoo shops and get heavily tattooed in the West.  Tattoo Adam himself spent his apprenticeship in a shop owned by bikers.

“I remember being 17 and hearing all these awesome stories of bar fights the night before.  I couldn’t wait until I was old enough… it was probably a good idea I got out of there before I could get into that.”  Adam shares.

Come to the shop where our Hawaii Tattooists do award-winning Honolulu custom tattoos, detail model trains, build tattoo machines, ride Harleys, shoot guns, paint awesome watercolor, discuss the history of tattoos, politics, and more!

Our Waikiki tattoo parlor is open 7 days a week from 10a-10p each day.

Hawaii Tattoo: 434 Tattoo, A Year in Review

Another year is winding down at our Waikiki tattoo parlour, 434 Tattoo, and while Lil Wayne or Wiz Khalifa skipped out at our offers to tattoo them, we still had a monumental year since starting this humble online publication but a blink of a year ago (flashback to our first ever post).

In January, we got off to a famous start as Marko inked Grammy Award winning Rap Superstar T-Pain!  T-Pain got the real pain and Marko sketched and did a small piece for him while he was on the island.  And T-, if you want some more pain, Marko’s got you on the Tattoo removal:

Just joking and onto February, Tattoo Adam inked this custom lion tattoo, a sequel to the first piece you’ll see soon enough:

As the Ides of March rolled in, we remembered the Waikiki Tattoo shop, Hart and Huntington, who saw their doors closed.  We wonder who was surprised by the short tenure of the corporate tattoo shop?  In Hawaii, where our Oahu tattoo parlor is located, they say that the rain is a blessing, while April showered, we were showered with a visit from tattooist, Ariano Delano.

May was a big month for us.  Tattoo Adam took off on an adventure in the Philippines, and JMAW, joined the 434 Tattoo Ohana as Blogger/Content Editor.  Here’s his first piece with us:

Oh, wait, meant to put his first written piece, that’s the first custom tattoo he ever had from Tattoo Adam.  June saw our team member, tattoo artist Andy Burley get married by Minister Adam (he wears many hats) and our shop g0t featured in the new island publication, 808 Ink Magazine.  They might have some typos but you can’t mistake the custom ink coutesy of Tattoo Adam.

In July, we had a few laughs courtesy of a cheerleader with some attitude, and were visited by another celebrity as fashion and jewelry designer of Rock’n’Roll Couture, Amal Guessous, stopped by.

August came on down and we explored the world of facial tattoos, polynesian tattoo style and in September, the fun didn’t stop as we started to take you behind the scenes with our Tattoo videos.  Adam and Marko took ‘Center Stage’ and were featured in an Art Show.  We even did a public service announcement about tattoos.

As we entered Fall, October saw us drop a little 411 about the history of the tattoo laws in Hawaii, and we also held our first ever Military Appreciation Month in November.  November was a huge month in general as Hawaii was the site of APEC 2011 and our deals didn’t stop as we offered more appreciation deals to the agencies to come in and get some ink done. What else you ask? Well, Adam and Arlita’s son, Andrew celebrated his first birthday!!!  And we broke into the Google Top Ten in a category which eluded us for some time.  That Google…

Marko even cut a commercial for us!

And that pretty much brings you up to date to December.  It’s been a crazy year and from our crazy (in a good way) crew to yours, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.  We’re looking forward to putting a piece of beauty on you soon.

Talking Asian Tattoo

In this tattoo Video, from 434 Tattoo Masterpiece Theatre, Tattoo Adam takes a break from his work to talk with us about Asian Tattooing, answering a few questions about what drew him to that specific style, as well as exploring some of the influences that Asian Tattooing and which Tattooists have had an impact on his own development as an artist.

And of course, because people have a fascination about The Yakuza, we talk a little bit about that… or do we?  Find out by watching and tuning into our Hawaii tattoo Studio, 434 Tattoo!

You can also keep up with us on Facebook here and there!

Hawaii Tattoo Artist in the Spotlight: Andy Burley

Hawaii Tattoo Artist

In the Spotlight: Andy Burley

By: JMAW

“Can I take a picture of that?” I ask.

“Yeah go for it. That was for my wife, she decided she didn’t want it, she keeps changing her mind.”

434 Tattoo‘s, Andy Burley, holds the prestigious distinction of being the only Tattooist to make it through the gauntlet of an Apprenticeship with Tattoo Adam.  “It’s something I have always wanted to do.” he says while working at his station in the Waikiki Tattoo Shop.

“Ask anyone, if I say I’m going to do something, I do it.” Andy says and laughs, “Maybe I’m just stubborn.”

The newest member of the team, in terms of time spent tattooing at the Hawaii Tattoo Studio, has a growing client list and with designs like this, you can see that his talent is no joke. “Andy’s been trained by me and I have the greatest confidence in his ability.”  Tattoo Adam throws in between a joke or two about Andy.

“I never considered myself creative, but you give me an idea, I’ll run with it.”  Andy once told me when we talked about how he got into it. He might not consider himself creative but he lights up like a Christmas Tree when the Tattoo Machine is in his hand.  It’s a sight to see Andy tattooing, his laid-back vibe goes out the window and he goes into the zone.

Give him an idea and watch the magic that he gives you.

APEC Aftermath: Back to Tattoos in Honolulu

It’s still too early to tell whether or not the presence of APEC in Honolulu was a boon or a bust.  Many local businesses outside of Waikiki did not see much of a difference in their clientele base.  But now that APEC is in the rear view mirror, we can get back to business!!!

At 434 Tattoo,  our Waikiki Tattoo Studio, we specialize in the custom tattoo.  Our tattooists can do just about any tattoo out there (although there are some places an artist won’t go…) from thousands of Tattoo Flash designs to choose along the walls to putting together a custom piece based on an idea, picture or theme you have.

There are alot of Tattoo Parlors in Hawaii so why should you chose 434 Tattoo and not Tattoolicious, 808 Tattoo, or Koi Tattoo?  Shop owner Tattoo Adam is world famous, having been in the industry for two decades and has tattooed people from all walks of life including “Iron” Mike Tyson Marko Livingston also has tattooed celebrities including Grammy Award Winner T-Pain and is an accomplished graffiti artist in addition to being a tattooist.  The “youngest” member of our crew, Andy Burley, has earned the prestigious accomplishment of being the only person to ever complete an apprenticeship with Adam, and his book is growing by leaps and bounds.

“I was brought up in the old school way of tattooing.”  ~Tattoo Adam

All that aside, we love tattooing and we strive to share our love for what we do during the entire experience.  Our Waikiki tattoo shop is clean following the Hawaii Department of Health Protocol, we are all licensed by the State of Hawaii to tattoo, and use the most up to date techniques to sterilize our shop and equipment.

Our Honolulu Tattoo parlor is not only award winning but fun!  Come on down for your free consultation, let your Inner Child run around, and get some work with the pros at 434 Tattoo.  If you’re in the military, be sure to take sure of our Military Appreciation Special, going on during the month of November.  Ask our staff for more details.

Thanks for reading!

How to Tattoo Video Series: Consultations and Stencils

Greetings Tattoolings from 434 Tattoo, your number one destination for a Custom Tattoo or Polynesian Tattoo in Hawaii.  Our Waikiki Tattoo Shop is conveniently located in the heart of Honolulu between Oahu’s famed Waikiki Beach and Ala Moana Shopping Center and Beach Park.

In this segment of our How to Tattoo Videos, we watch as Tattoo Adam explains a key part that goes into the consultation (all of which are free at our Waikiki Tattoo Studio) and shows us how he comes up with the artwork for the Tattoo Stencil.

Stay tuned to see what the finished product(s) look like and if Tattooist Andy Burley has any other words of wisdom.  And if you can’t wait, come on down!  We aren’t Tattoolicious.  Nor are we 808 Tattoo.  They might be all good and well but we are 434 Tattoo, the People’s Choice!

Boxing’s Manny Pacquiao Opens Tattoo Shop

In the Philippines, tattoos are not so kosher.  Tattoo Adam experienced the side-eyed glances first hand as he made his way through the cities, the villages, the jungles during his trip earlier this year.

But the sentiment towards tattoos could be changing if multiple time Boxing Champion, entertainer, and local politician, Manny Pacquiao, has a say in the matter.  Pacquiao, who owns many other business ventures in addition to his 8 world titles, is a vocal tattoo advocate, and his new tattoo shop is tapped as Champion Ink in LA.

While people across the world still have differing (if not outdated) views on tattoos, this could be a positive step towards more acceptance of visible tattoos.  One customer recently shared his experience of being disqualified from an interview after being asked if he had any tattoos and was told that he would not be considered for a position (regardless of qualifications) because of it.

“At least you’re not in the mainland…” Andy Burley, a tattooist in our Hawaii Tattoo Parlor, chimed in.  “Consider yourself lucky, you should see some of the looks I get there.”

It’s a good thing we have guys out there like Manny fighting not only in the ring, but for the people.  Thanks Manny, we may not have gotten the chance to vote for you, but judging by the recent poll in the Honolulu Star Advertiser , with 7 of 10 people in Hawaii are unhappy with Governor Neil Abercrombie’s performance, maybe it’s time someone who shares your views makes a run for office here in the islands.

Tattoo Adam in 2012?  Wouldn’t you like to know what we have in store.  Muahaha!!!

We are 434 Tattoo.
And we are here for you (the people, People’s Champ two years running).
