Hawaii Custom Tattoo After-Care

From time to time, it is important to revisit the proper tattoo after-care here at the official blog for our Waikiki tattoo parlor, 434 Tattoo.  Hawaii Tattoo Artist Andy Burley had quite the story of his own to recount that he heard from a customer and what she was advised to do in taking care of her new tattoos… but we’ll save that for the end.

The Tattooist will normally wrap your new piece with a bandage to protect the fresh wound while it is fresh.  S/he will clean it up, wipe it down and wrap it up because it may still be bleeding.  You are advised to keep the bandage on for at least an hour, no more than two hours, and after that, never wear or cover the tattoo with another bandage while it is healing.

The next step involves cleaning your tattoo on your own.  It is suggested to use Dial, Dove, or even unscented liquid soap.  While you can use scented soap, the artificial ingredients can cause irritation, which is why unscented soaps are recommended.  Using warm to hot water also can help in making it feel better, particularly for long sessions.

After you wash your piece, pat it dry with a paper towel or clean towel.  “Take care of it, baby it.”  Tattoo Adam, Owner of our Hawaii Custom Tattoos Shop has often remarked.  If you take care of your piece, it will not get infected, will heal properly, and look great after.  Once the piece is healed, be sure to put sunscreen on it when going out in the sun because the sun can and will make the color in your tattoo fade.  Note: You are also advised to stay out of the ocean and pools for at least two weeks while the skin heals.

“If you take care of it, it will look like new for Life.”

One thing you probably don’t want to do or try at your own risk is to use Listerine.

“I had a customer who came to me for the first time and when I asked if her she knew how to take care of it, she replied, ‘Yeah I know, go in the shower and pour Listerine on it.’ to which I said, Ouch, how does that feel?”  Andy shared recently.  The woman had gone to the same tattoo artist her whole Life until getting the piece from Andy and that artist told her to put Listerine.

Well, Listerine does kill some sort of bacteria…

We aren’t dentists and won’t prescribe that but we do specialize and are licensed to do tattoos so come on down to our venue of Hawaii Custom Tattoos if that’s what you are in the mood for.  We’d love to ink ya!

Tattoos in Hawaii News

Our tattoo studio in Honolulu, is not a stranger to the news.

Led by Owner, Tattoo Adam, and the coverage he received while working as a tattoo artist in Las Vegas, doing custom tattooing for the likes of Mike Tyson, among many, we have been mentioned and featured in the news from time to time.  When you are the defending Best Customing Tattooing Studio in Honolulu for three years and counting, you find your way into the headlines.

While perusing Facebook recently, we saw that Marko Livingston was once again photographed for Honolulu Street Pulse.  But little did we know we would find these pearls…

Here we have tattooist, Andy Burley, striking a pose as Tattoo Adam and Marko do what we at 434 Tattoo do best in the background of our tattoo Parlor in Honolulu, located at 434 Ena Rd.

And here we have Mr. Burley reading your mind so that you get the best Tattoo  in Hawaii possible!  So come on down for your free consultation, get your mind read, and get inked by the best in Honolulu!

These pictures and the credit for the photos go to Honolulu Photographer Tony Grillo (Markoʻs Uncle) and the photos are from his Facebook.

Andy’s A Bad Ass

Andy may get a good ribbing every now and again from the guys at our Waikiki Tattoo studio, but make no mistake, the soft-spoken, friendly cat from Cali is a bad-ass! Not because he owns a motorcycle though that is pretty cool… And not because he is a member of a Motorcycle Club, Brethren’s Creed, which some would say is really cool as well…

Andy’s bad because he is getting his roll on!

Not like raver roll, we’re talking Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu rolling and grappling. Andy ‘may or may not’ have lived the lifestyle of an MMA fighter and coach back in the day in California. I write may or may not because see ‘soft-spoken’ above and well he doesn’t go around telling people about it. It just comes up, especially when he’s on the mat!

“I don’t like to talk about it.” Andy.

Despite his prowess on the mat and in the cage, he was bested though recently here at 434 Tattoo in Verbal Jiu-Jitsu when a homeless man asked if Andy could see him…

Oh the crazies!

In Other News…

Marko’s finishing up the tag he has been working on for a new Food Truck coming to a street corner or two near you! Stay tuned and we’ll be sure to let you know when this ‘Food Joint’ is up and running. But you’ll probably see it based on the awesome designs by Marko.

Tattoo Adam is back, live, and direct busting out the finest in custom tattoos and busy since his trip to the Philippines. A cool sidenote, Horioshi III, legendary Japanese tattooist, who Adam’s back piece is by, is featured in the newest issue of Hawaii’s 808 Ink Magazine on stands in Barnes and Nobles for sure and some other fine establishments selling such publications. Go out and learn about the Legend!

With that, keep on, keepin’ on and stay tuned for the best in Hawaii Tattoo Deals and Discounts.

The sun sets on another month here in Hawaii and in the blink of an eye it is June and we are going to be deep in the year, like halfway over!  Despite that, the show must go on at our Waikiki tattoo parlor.

First up, Owner and President of 434 Tattoo, our award-winning custom tattooing shop, Tattoo Adam, is back in the building.  The President took his family for a respite in the Philippines for the better part of May but now he is back for the Summer Rush that we have been experiencing!

Please note that this Summer, in addition to our Custom Tattoos, 434 Couture, we are also offering a severed fingers special (Joke Alert!) to go with all our other amazing Hawaii Deals and Discounts.

Hawaii Tattooist Marko Livingston is hitting the ink hard in addition to some other artistic endeavors that he has going on.  Be sure to stop by and talk to him about all his work, he has a little something going on for everyone.

Andy Burley, another Tattoo Artist on our team, is a man of few words so he lets his crazy designs do the talking.  Come on down and get your Zombie on with the man!

Doubledown is working hard to finish up his apprenticeship and his style is growing by the day!  Needless to say, there is a little of something for everyone here at our Honolulu Tattoo studio.  So chickity check yourself, before you wreck yourself and come roll with the Good Guys here at 434.

And by the way, We Love you This Much!

Hawaii Tattoo Weekly: Home Alone

Tattoo Adam has left the building!  Was this his last Custom Tattoo forever?

Who knows how long he’ll be gone or if he’ll come back from the jungles of the Philippines…  What does it mean for our Tattoo Artists at our Waikiki tattoo shop, who are at Home Alone!

Marko’s Mark

Hawaii Tattoo Artist Marko Livingston has a number of items for sale online here on Etsy, including handcrafted pieces made from Top Secret bone found where only he knows…

Be sure to check out the page and be on the lookout for new things including: t-shirts, stickers, cell phone cases, skateboards, and more!

If you want to see Marko’s other artwork up close and personal, find him here at 434 Tattoo, online, or who knows, maybe he’s next to go to the Jungle!!!

Doubledown’s Corner

Doubledown has been tearing it up, the first day Adam was gone, he did 8 tattoos!  “I got the feeling of my hands being really sore, tight, after a full day of tattooing, it was awesome!”  He shared, the experience of growing as an apprentice Tattooist still exciting for him.

He has also been hard at work developing new Tattoo Flash, some of which you will soon see on a skateboard in in our Honolulu Tattoo shop soon.

Andy’s Ride

Andy’s been tearing it up Easy Rider style on the Harley while also getting back on the mat.  In another life, he may have been a professional Fighter.  You’ll have to ask him in person if he really used to train because he’d choke me out or arm bar me or roundhouse kick me if I were to say that in fact he did no such thing.  So I’m only implying…

In Closing…

Stay tuned for more happenings, updates, more, and if anything to see how the show goes on without the Captain at the helm!  We are open from 10a-10p, 7 days a week, rain, shine, floods, hail, and tornados (all of which we’ve had in Hawaii in the last year)!

Man and (Tattoo) Machine: Hawaii Tattoo Artist Andy Burley

Hawaii Tattoo artist Andy Burley, is a man of few words, he’s all about the ride and getting ink done.  So there hasn’t been much said by Andy online in recent months.  But that’s about to change because the man done opened up and had a story to share for our Man and (Tattoo) Machine Series!

Inspired by Tattoo Adam, I had asked all the artists at our Waikiki tattoo studio, 434 Tattoo, about machines they had built and Andy shared that he built a couple over the years.

But he really wanted to talk about a special machine that was given to him…

Awhile back, Andy was speaking with a buddy of his stomping grounds in California, who mentioned that a mutual friend from High School was also a Tattooist and had taken up building machines.  Andy and his tattooing homie, Mike Salinger (no relation to the Author of Catcher in the Rye), reconnected and talked stories and the piece you see above is a custom, handmade tattoo machine made by Mike himself!

To see more of Mike’s work or to get your own custom tattoo machine, check out Cascadia Tattoo Machines.

To see the “G – O – L – D” and get your tattoo piece from Hawaii’s own, Andy Burley, visit our Honolulu Tattoo parlor at 434 Ena Rd!  We’re open 7 days a week, rain or shine, from 10a- 10p.

When Did You First Tattoo?

It’s never too late to get a new custom tattoo!

At 434 Tattoo, our Waikiki Tattoo parlor, we have four talented Hawaii tattooists including Tattoo Adam (and his 2 decades of experience), Marko Livingston, Andy Burley, and Karl Doubledown Juthans who can assist you in getting the next or maybe even you first tattoo!

Speaking of first tattoos, this Editor decided to poll a few people and see when they got their first tattoo, including the men of 434 (calendar with Andy and his new Harley on the Cover coming soon).  We’ll do this chronologically for sh!ts and gigs…

Coming in first at the age of 13 y/o is Marko Livingston.  Don’t worry all you legal eagles, he ‘handpoked’ himself.

Zach, a loyal customer and frequenter of our fine establishment, also got his ink around this time, having gotten his first tattoo in a garage while in the 9th grade.  He hid it because his Dad told his family growing up no tattoos until they were 18.  As soon as he hit 18, he went and got one for all the world to see!

Tattoo Adam himself got tattooed at the 16, he would shortly join the industry as an apprentice at the age of 17, and go on to tattoo people from all walks of life, all around the world, including the infamous ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson.

This writer got his first tattoo at the age of 30, a ribcage, arm sleeve, chest piece, back piece later and well, it’s safe to say I love it!  Our friend Jacob, got his first tattoo a few months ago here at our Honolulu Tattoo studio, at the age of 54!  High Five to you buddy for continuing with a tattoo every week since it seems!!!

Note: Andy was not available for comment.  You’ll have to ask him yourself.

No minors were injured or inked during the writing of this blog!

Hawaii Tattoo Shop : News

Greetings Hawaii Tattoo Enthusiasts!  Just wanted to send you some updates and happenings from around the way and the block and so forth coming live out of our Honolulu Tattoo shop, 434 Tattoo.

Tattoo Adam is Leaving the Building!!!

Adam and his family will be leaving the islands for a vacation to Arlita’s homeland from May 8th-28th.  With the way Adam’s been talking, it might even be forever…  Who knows?  Get your sessions in or buy your plane tickets to the Philippines.

But we’ll still have the rest of our team of talented Tattoo Artists on tap and ready and here’s some more news about them!

Marko’s Going Old Skool Tattoo

Marko Livingston, an accomplished tattooist and artist in multiple genres, is working on developing his water colors.  An artist dedicated to perfecting his abilities, he is currently working on learning water color the right way.  Taking some Sailor Jerry Tattoo Flash and doing it in the traditional fashion.  In the old days, they only had certain amounts of colors.

Doubledown Tats is Going Up!

Doubledown is making great leaps, and strides in his tattoo apprenticeship.  He’s been working his way through the APT tattoo manual quickly.  And it makes sense, the Dude’s like Macgyver and…

Because of Doubledown, we offer the only Hawaii Helicopter and Tattoo Special anywhere!

That’s right, you rent the helicopter and Doubledown, who is also a licensed helicopter pilot, will fly you to your yacht (he also can pilot boats, we’re serious about all of this), and he will give you a custom tattoo.

And in Obscure News

Andy Burley got walked in on while using the bathroom.  “I yelled, Dude, someone’s in here.  He didn’t listen.”

So there you have it, some more news, views, and more from 434 Tattoo.
