What time is it? 420!

Meet Joe.

IMG_3218

Joe stopped by our Waikiki tattoo shop, 434 Tattoo, to get a Polynesian tattoo while visiting Hawaii.  Joe was taking some time off from work to enjoy the sun, sand, & sea here in the beautiful 808 State!

Joe’s work?

IMG_0351

Joe works in politics in New Hampshire!  As a member of the House of Representatives, Joe listened to the input of his community and was a part of making recent history.  That history?

The New Hampshire House of Representatives was the first legislative body in America to vote for the decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana.

Recently in Hawaii, laws towards marijuana have been evolving as well.  With more progressive thought and movements making waves across America, it’s only a matter of time before this plant, which is medicine for a great number of people, to be legalized here as well.  This is an issue that is sure to be continued but with marriage equality finally making its way to legality in America, perhaps this will be next.

Stay tuned!

In the meantime, should you be looking for your next Hawaiian tattoo, look no further!

Bringing in your own artwork for a tattoo

Up North in Canada, there’s a father starting a tattoo tradition that is sure to turn heads.

It’s a cool concept for a body of work and people often ask if they can get designs that they or a loved one drew inked on there body.   Everyone is welcome to bring ideas, pictures, and concepts to our Waikiki tattoo studio and we will work with customers to bring any and all tattoo dreams to Life!

Our Hawaii custom tattoo studio 434 tattoo can perform a wide variety of designs including Asian tattooingtribal tattoosHawaiian Tattoo stylesPolynesian tattoos and more!  Just swing through any day, set up a free consultation and let’s start the discussion on your new tattoo!

What is a Custom Tattoo?

A quick search of the internet and you will find the definition of tattoo as follows:

Wait!  Say what?!?!  That’s your random fact of the day as to what the word tattoo can mean.  Here is another definition, which you’re probably a bit more familiar with:

Tattoos are a form of body modification that have been practiced for a variety of reasons for years. From cultural significance to marks of imprisonment, today’s have occupied a place on our bodies and been a part of all walks of Life.

At our tattoo shop in Waikiki434 Tattoo, our team is skilled in all sorts of tattoo designs ranging from traditional tattoos, old school styles, new school tattoos, Polynesian tattoos, and specifically popular here in Hawaii, Hawaiian tattoos.

Take the traditional a step back and Horiyume, also known as shop owner Tattoo Adam Siehr, practices Japanese tebori tattoos, which involves the tap of the needles with and no tattoo machine.

Ultimately what our team strives to create for you are custom tattoos!

Custom tattoos are original creations of artwork, that are then applied to the body.  While Tattoo Flash is something you’ll find on the walls in a tattoo shop, and are quite popular, custom tattoos allow the Tattoo Artist to flex her/his creative muscle and design something that is unique to you.

Custom tattooing is something we take pride in and are well-prepared to do!  For a free consultation on any tattoo, come on by and we’ll happy to discuss the custom tattoo process and answer any tattoo questions you have in general!

Hawaii Tattoo History

Long before our award winning Hawaii Custom Tattoos shop came to ply our trade in the Hawaiian Islands, tattoos in Hawaii were being done for generations in Polynesian.

The word tattoo itself, finds origins in the the word ‘tatau.’  This is not a Hawaiian word since the the Letter ‘T’ is not found in the Hawaiian Alphabet and finds its origins in Tahiti, Tonga, and Samoa. When the Hawaiian culture began to form, the Polynesians who populated the islands and shared heritage and customs with the other Polynesian islands, dubbed the word as ‘Kakau.’

Authentic Hawaiian tattoos were a rich part of the culture and embodied deeper spiritual and cultural meaning.  When the Europeans arrived in the 1800’s, along with them came new customs and new cultural practices.  As a result, the deep history and meaning of tattoos were lost to the masses and went underground, like many other indigenous practices all over the world when the Euro-influences took hold.

Today Hawaiian cultural practitioners of all things Hawaiian, including traditional Hawaiian tattooing, forms of healing (la’au lapa’au), chanting (oli), hula, and more are enjoying a period of revitalization from their hard work to develop and share cultural based learning models and movements.

Check out this video of the Polynesian tattoo tradition to see what it looks like:

As the World continues its march towards globalization, it is important to continue to honor where we have come from and not forget all of the customs and traditions that got us here.  For meaningful tattoos in Hawaii, come on down to our Waikiki Tattoo parlor, led by Tattoo Adam and his over two decades of experience in custom tattooing.  He has been in Hawaii for almost 2/3 of that time and has a great appreciation and understanding for Hawaiian tattooing, its meaning, and the history.

We are open daily from 10a – 10p.  Consultations are free and scheduling an appointment is recommended.  Walk-ins are also welcome, we just don’t want to keep you waiting because it can get busy!

Hope to see you soon!

Andy’s A Bad Ass

Andy may get a good ribbing every now and again from the guys at our Waikiki Tattoo studio, but make no mistake, the soft-spoken, friendly cat from Cali is a bad-ass! Not because he owns a motorcycle though that is pretty cool… And not because he is a member of a Motorcycle Club, Brethren’s Creed, which some would say is really cool as well…

Andy’s bad because he is getting his roll on!

Not like raver roll, we’re talking Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu rolling and grappling. Andy ‘may or may not’ have lived the lifestyle of an MMA fighter and coach back in the day in California. I write may or may not because see ‘soft-spoken’ above and well he doesn’t go around telling people about it. It just comes up, especially when he’s on the mat!

“I don’t like to talk about it.” Andy.

Despite his prowess on the mat and in the cage, he was bested though recently here at 434 Tattoo in Verbal Jiu-Jitsu when a homeless man asked if Andy could see him…

Oh the crazies!

In Other News…

Marko’s finishing up the tag he has been working on for a new Food Truck coming to a street corner or two near you! Stay tuned and we’ll be sure to let you know when this ‘Food Joint’ is up and running. But you’ll probably see it based on the awesome designs by Marko.

Tattoo Adam is back, live, and direct busting out the finest in custom tattoos and busy since his trip to the Philippines. A cool sidenote, Horioshi III, legendary Japanese tattooist, who Adam’s back piece is by, is featured in the newest issue of Hawaii’s 808 Ink Magazine on stands in Barnes and Nobles for sure and some other fine establishments selling such publications. Go out and learn about the Legend!

With that, keep on, keepin’ on and stay tuned for the best in Hawaii Tattoo Deals and Discounts.

Hawaii Tattoo History

At 434 Tattoo, our Waikiki tattoo Shop, we like to share our love of tattoos in as many ways possible.  Part of that involves seeing where the art of tattooing originated from, learning more about tattoo culture ourselves, and sharing some of the background info about that.

The Hawaiian people and their Polynesian cousins (i.e. the Samoans, the Tongans) brought many of their traditional, cultural customs that included weapon-making, artwork, and tattooing to the Hawaiian Islands many years ago.

The term for their version of custom tattooing was kakau.  The purpose encompassed not only body modification, but served to recognize different members of the culture and their social station, and it also was for good luck and protection for health issues and spiritual well-being.

Check out what we found on PBS:

“Intricate patterns, mimicking woven reeds or other natural forms, graced men’s arms, legs, torso and face. Women were generally tattooed on the hand, fingers, wrists and sometimes on their tongue.

The designs were applied by specially trained kahuna, experts in one or more critical tasks, who applied pigment to the skin with a needle made from bone, tied to a stick and struck by a mallet. Traditional designs varied widely, according to available records, but many memorialized fallen chiefs, leaders or family members. The process was guarded with great secrecy and all implements were destroyed after use, according to the dictates of kapu.”

And here’s a post that we did earlier this year about Polynesian Face tattoos.  Pretty neat when you think about it because at the root, there are many similarities to the history of Asian Tattooing and other styles of tattoo art.

Until next blog…

Have a Happy New Year in Hawaii, wherever you are in the world! And be sure to stop by our Honolulu tattoo parlor for all your custom tattoo needs the next time you’re in Waikiki!
