What time is it? 420!

Meet Joe.

IMG_3218

Joe stopped by our Waikiki tattoo shop, 434 Tattoo, to get a Polynesian tattoo while visiting Hawaii.  Joe was taking some time off from work to enjoy the sun, sand, & sea here in the beautiful 808 State!

Joe’s work?

IMG_0351

Joe works in politics in New Hampshire!  As a member of the House of Representatives, Joe listened to the input of his community and was a part of making recent history.  That history?

The New Hampshire House of Representatives was the first legislative body in America to vote for the decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana.

Recently in Hawaii, laws towards marijuana have been evolving as well.  With more progressive thought and movements making waves across America, it’s only a matter of time before this plant, which is medicine for a great number of people, to be legalized here as well.  This is an issue that is sure to be continued but with marriage equality finally making its way to legality in America, perhaps this will be next.

Stay tuned!

In the meantime, should you be looking for your next Hawaiian tattoo, look no further!

Tattoos & Clues

The discovery of human remains in New York and the sharp eye of a detective took a case to tattoo artists to help. Read the full story here.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what occurred and who this mystery woman was but the usage of the science and the knowledge of tattoo artists about tattooing and the customs of getting tattooed in different eras took this case a lot further than its beginnings.

Tattoo styles, go through phases, just like everything else.  For example, on the West Coast of the United States, Polynesian tattoos are taking off despite their existence for centuries and cultural tradition in Polynesia.  Americana and old school art is an instance of a style that was popular in different sub-cultures (military & bikers) and are now en vogue with tattoo enthusiasts from all walks of life.

For every two steps forward and two steps back, tattoos for the most part are enjoying a period where more acceptance is taking place.

While we don’t wish any ill will on anyone, one must admit that it is fascinating what our tattoos can say about us. Not only can they have a meaning into the individual lives we live, they can also speak to the greater movements that are in play in the world.

If you’re interested in getting ink and leaving clues behind for the future generations, come on by our Waikiki tattoo studio.  We are open 7 days a week from 10a to 10p and have a talented team led by veteran artist Tattoo Adam Siehr.

Our tattoo ohana is ready to welcome you!  So come on down with your questions, ideas, and interest.  We’re stoked to help!

Where to get a Polynesian Tattoo in Waikiki

url

Where should I get a Hawaiian Tattoo?  Hawaii, duh!  Just joking but we’re sure people ask the question:

Where to get a Polynesian Tattoo in Waikiki?

We’ve got your answer! How about at our tattoo studio in Waikiki? 434 Tattoo, located at 434 Ena Road, just down from the historic Wailana Coffee House, is open 7 days a week from 10a – 10p.

Our Hawaii tattoo shop is owned by Horiyume Tattoo Adam Siehr, who has tattooed across the globe at conventions and worked extensively here in Honolulu, Las Vegas, and his native Milwaukee.

Horiryume has been working as a tattoo artist for over 2o years(!) and has been an artist his entire life, having also spent time drawing from an early age, and for a long time practiced the art form of graffiti.

Since opening it doors, 434 Tattoo has seen a large variety of clientele frequent the shop.  To this day, old time customers return for more work from around the world, after having gotten their first tattoos while on a trip to Hawaii.

Polynesian tattoos are extremely popular here in Hawaii and Horiyume has practiced them for many years.  If you have an idea or need some help in telling the story through a Hawaiian tattoo, please stop by and talk to us.  In addition to an archive of books showcasing all tattoo disciplines, the wealth of knowledge that our team contains is vast and extensive.

Feel free to make a consultation with us and we’ll meet with you to discuss your ideas, take the time to draw it up, and then the magic happens where we apply the stencil and start your outline and shading.

Polynesian style tattoos can be very intricate so let us know your time and budget and we’ll work with you to create a schedule to get the work on and looking good in a manner that you’re comfortable with.  If a sleeve takes longer than expected (many people think they can get their whole arm done in an hour when it’s more of a process that could be up to six or more hours), don’t fret because the end result is going to be gorgeous and part of that tattoo experience is enjoying the Journey of getting new ink.

Tattooed Stories from the Life and Times of Tattoo Adam

20130602-152444.jpg

We are grateful for our customers year round but the Summer is a welcome surge to balance out the occasional slow times of year. So please do call and set up your appointments so that we can pencil you in the appointment book!

Just a reminder to our customers, all consultations are free and all artwork is free. You only pay to get tattooed! Take advantage of the opportunity to speak wi our talented team of Hawaii Tattooists who specialize in Hawaiian Tattoos, Custom Tattoos, Freehand Tattoos, and The Asian style tattoos, all of which are popular here in Hawaii and around the world!

Speaking of Asian tattoos and around the world, Tattoo Adam knows a thing or two about both as he has tattooed customers from and traveled all over. Pictured above is a whole circle of clients who became friends and family who came in over the course of 2012 to get work done by Adam and the whole 434 Tattoo family.

Adam believes travel is an important part of Life and keeping the mind, body, and spirit healthy. He has been to many countries and while in visiting Okinawa, Adam used to tattoo people on the military base, as word spread that he was in town and the popularity of tattoos with military personnel.

Adam had visited Okinawa with friend and Japanese Tattoo artist, Ryo (who has also visited our Waikiki tattoo parlor in the past). Okinawa is a lot like Hawaii but it has a smaller community so there weren’t as much out there to choose from in terms of Tattoo shops when he had visited years before.

“There was however Yakuza Bike gangs…”

Yakuza and tattoos go hand in hand. Speaking of hands…

(To be continued)

Hawaii Tattoo History

Long before our award winning Hawaii Custom Tattoos shop came to ply our trade in the Hawaiian Islands, tattoos in Hawaii were being done for generations in Polynesian.

The word tattoo itself, finds origins in the the word ‘tatau.’  This is not a Hawaiian word since the the Letter ‘T’ is not found in the Hawaiian Alphabet and finds its origins in Tahiti, Tonga, and Samoa. When the Hawaiian culture began to form, the Polynesians who populated the islands and shared heritage and customs with the other Polynesian islands, dubbed the word as ‘Kakau.’

Authentic Hawaiian tattoos were a rich part of the culture and embodied deeper spiritual and cultural meaning.  When the Europeans arrived in the 1800’s, along with them came new customs and new cultural practices.  As a result, the deep history and meaning of tattoos were lost to the masses and went underground, like many other indigenous practices all over the world when the Euro-influences took hold.

Today Hawaiian cultural practitioners of all things Hawaiian, including traditional Hawaiian tattooing, forms of healing (la’au lapa’au), chanting (oli), hula, and more are enjoying a period of revitalization from their hard work to develop and share cultural based learning models and movements.

Check out this video of the Polynesian tattoo tradition to see what it looks like:

As the World continues its march towards globalization, it is important to continue to honor where we have come from and not forget all of the customs and traditions that got us here.  For meaningful tattoos in Hawaii, come on down to our Waikiki Tattoo parlor, led by Tattoo Adam and his over two decades of experience in custom tattooing.  He has been in Hawaii for almost 2/3 of that time and has a great appreciation and understanding for Hawaiian tattooing, its meaning, and the history.

We are open daily from 10a – 10p.  Consultations are free and scheduling an appointment is recommended.  Walk-ins are also welcome, we just don’t want to keep you waiting because it can get busy!

Hope to see you soon!
