Traditional Tebori in our Waikiki Tattoo Shop

Collaboration between Tattoo Adam & Takashi

Guest artist, Tebori tattooist Takashi, has arrived and is getting down to business at our Waikiki tattoo shop 434 Tattoo! Takashi has joined us in the lead-up to the 2015 Pacific Ink & Art Expo, also referred to as the Hawaii Tattoo Convention.

This is a wonderful opportunity to get an authentic Japanese tattoo experience outside of Japan.  In recent years, we have developed a tebori space in our Waikiki Tattoo Parlour. This quiet space will allow you to get the most out of your tebori experience so if you’re remotely curious, come on down and check us out.  We’re open 7 days a week, appointments preferred though walk-ins are always welcome, and we offer free consultations.

Japanese tattooing and Japanese tattoo culture are core to our shop.  Though experienced and talented in all forms of tattooing, we have a particular passion and connection to the vein of the artform that stems from Japan.

Early on in his life, our waikiki tattoo studio owner Tattoo Adam was exposed to tattoos & art.  When he saw the Japanese full-body tattoos, a passion developed.  Adam has since been to Japan countless times, experiencing tebori himself from the master Horiyoshi III.

We are located at 434 Ena Road & open from 10a – 10p.  Call us today to arrange a consultation or appointment.

Aloha!

Top 5 Tattoo Stories of the Week

IMG_20130802_095525
Tattoo News on a previous edition of the Star-Advertiser’s TGIF

It’s been a busy week of ‘interesting’ tattoo news from around the globe and the interwebz!  Here are a few of them for you to take a quick look through and see if you really want to click-through.

Enjoy!

5. Soccer Star Francesco Totti made waves for taking a selfie after scoring his second goal during a game this past week.  A fan loved the image so much, he went out and got a tattoo to memorialize the occasion!

Telling you Tim Cook, that image is your new apple ad campaign, Bro!

4. Rub on tattoo for diabetics may end the need to use a needle.

Will this technology impact the types of tattoos people get in time?

3.  A group is now connecting Breast Cancer Survivors with tattoo artists to create art to cover the scars from surgery.

Shout out to these women for having the courage to transform a painful memory into something beautiful!

2. One more football fan got a tattoo of his team, The Cowboys, trying to predict a Super Bowl victory.  Sweet, right?!?! Well, the Cowboys lost their matchup this past week to the Green Bay Packers and have been eliminated from the playoffs.  This fan is keeping his tattoo anyway.  Let’s hope people learn from it and wait until after the Super Bowl is over before deciding to call their shot like Babe Ruth.  LOL, like that’s ever going to happen.

Here’s to the next batch of sports team championship tattoos coming up this year!

1. Artist taking money to tattoo people’s names on herself.  What the heck?

We checked out her Kickstarter earlier in the day and it had already surpassed its funding goal of $6000 dollars, guess she’s get covered and more!

Well, as you can see it’s been an eventful time in tattoo news.  Come on down and create some newsworthy ink yourself at our custom tattoo shop in Waikiki!

434 Tattoo is staffed by some of the best and most experienced personnel in the State and we are happy to assist in making a beautiful custom tattoo for you!

Say no tattoo discrimination

20140703_150703
Horiyume (Tattoo Adam) painting an Asian inspired piece.

Came across two very interesting statements circulating the web recently that sparked some thoughts…

“Everybody that isn’t really aware of the newer trends in tattooing is just hung up on the stereotype that they’re shady and for bikers or gang members, just very seedy overall,” says Jerry Cross in an article about the opening of a new tattoo studio he owns with a few friends.

Another statement that catches the eye is the following headline:

Brad Pitt: I don’t want my daughters to get tattoos

The article is about an interview with his wife, Angelina Jolie, and both very well-known actors have ink.  So it’s a bit interesting to hear that he specifically doesn’t want their daughters to get ink.  She is quoted in the Fox News piece as saying:

“How do I say ‘No’? It’s especially hard for dads and girls,” she said. “For some reason men get a little more sensitive when the daughter gets a tattoo.”

It’s hard to fathom why the statement is aimed at just the daughters and not the sons.  It is easy to see why a parent might not want their child to have the same experiences, especially in the case where someone experienced tattoo discrimination.  But Pitt and Jolie have done pretty well for themselves so it’s doubtful the tattoos are all that bad.

For every step forward the artform takes, it seems like something happens that reinforces those sad, negative stereotypes that just aren’t true of everyone.  There are tons of criminals and assholes who have no ink.

The tattoo isn’t the problem.  There are great people who do alot for their communities who have tattoos. Tattooists are artists and for every stereotype, there are countless numbers of folks who break that mold.

The issue of discrimination runs a bit beyond just skin deep… and that type of ish is just a part of humanity and the problem will exist until we figure out a way to flush it.

But fear not!

Our tattoos here at 434 Tattoo are free from bullshit and our awesome tattoo studio in Waikiki is open 24/7, from 10a to 10p.  We specialize in custom tattooing and can intricately perform a number of styles including Asian tattoos, Hawaiian tattoo designs, & traditional old school tattoos and new school tattoos. We also have many books and tattoo flash available for you to review.

Bring your tattoo ideas and yourself and show solidarity against ignorance and stereotypes and come on down to get your ink on!

San Diego Police Department Bans Visible Ink

In the past few months, HPD’s chief banned visible tattoos on police officers in the City and County of Honolulu. Just the other week, the US Army announced it will be changing tattoo policies to be more tolerant of servicemen and servicewomen with tattoos.

The San Diego Police Department is taking a stance more similar to that of HPD in the coming week…

Check the story out at the link.

Recently, the BBC published an article talking about anti-tattoo discrimination laws in the UK because a growing number of people there, who are qualified for work, are finding themselves without work or call-backs because of visible tattoos. The percentage of people who are tattooed in the work-force is even higher in the US.

What this all means is that people, who can do great work, are being blacklisted because of their personal preference and choice to express themselves with tattoos.

As one of Hawaii’s best tattoo shops, we obviously support getting custom tattoos here at 434 Tattoo, our tattoo studio in Waikiki.

We are open 7 days a week, from 10a to 10p plying the trade we love and have served a great many of HPD’s finest, as well as military and law enforcement personnel from around the world.

Our Hawaii tattoo shop is going to continue to give great service to anyone and hopefully, some day, the choice to wear visible artwork on one’s skin will be accepted by organization’s around the world.

When considering that tattoos have had cultural significance since before businesses were businesses, it certainly is confusing why people are so opposed and afraid of tattooed individuals.

If one of the largest revenue generating forces in the world, the NFL, is okay with it, then maybe there’s hope and tattoos will have a shot at wide-stream acceptance.
