The Dangers of DIY Tattoos & Homemade Ink

20140703_153158
Horiyume Tattoo Adam, a professional tattoo artist licensed in the State of Hawaii working on a client out of his custom tattoo studio in Hawaii!

THINK BEFORE YOU INK!

In tattoo news online, a recent report illustrates the dangers of getting a homemade tattoo.

While the internet connects us and can be beautiful to share knowledge, it’s a little concerning that people can watch a video about tattooing with a sewing needle and think they are ready to go…

One of the most interesting points from the article was that in light of a recent outbreak of infections relating to some ink, a number of home tattoo kits were recalled by the FDA!

Another point to consider is that while some people might be okay with the diy tattoos, everyone’s immune system is different and for people with a weak immune system, an amateur tattoo done at a home could be particularly dangerous.

To each her/his own but the damages of a bad tattoo can last a lifetime and turn someone off from returning to correct it or getting a tattoo that is properly applied by a professional tattoo artist: someone who went through the rigors of training to learn the proper methods of tattooing and is sanctioned and licensed by the governing body where s/he lives.

For more information about tattoos and the professional standards in the industry, check out the National Tattoo Association.  434 Tattoo, our tattoo studio in Waikiki is a proud member and also a part of the Alliance of Professional Tattooists, which advocates for safe tattoos.

Stop by any time for a consultation and to work with a tattoo pro who can help you select something beautiful and meaningful!

Old School Tattoo Artists – Prince Vallar

We stumbled across this article recently about one of the old-school tattoo artists in Scotland, Prince Vallar.  It’s believed that Prince Vallar would make house-calls to create tattoos for his clientele, opened a “pop-up shop” to create ink, and eventually owned Scotland’s first recorded tattoo shop.

The article states: “By 1911 he was working as a “society tattooist” in 1911 at a time when the fashion for tattoos among the upper classes of Victorian and Edwardian Britain was already in decline.”

The shop he would later open (1934) is a testament to his work and the ability to continue plying his trade despite what cultural trends may have been.  Here’s to you and all the other tattoo artists who have paved the way before us!

While tattoos are gaining more mainstream acceptance, stories like this just show that everything happens in trends and waves and things can change.

Despite change, the best and the consistent among us always rise above.

If you’re looking for a tattoo or have an idea about one that you need help figuring out, swing on by our friendly neighborhood tattoo studio in Waikiki.

We’re here to ink ya!

Tattoo Care in the Summer

tumblr_n7t9v8aNBj1qijt23o1_500

Summer’s here!  That means a variety of things for many different people!  It’s a time to get outdoors, enjoy family, friends, and fun all over!  It’s also hotter than usual and trips to the beach, especially in places like Hawaii become very common.  As tempting as it is to just jump in the water, remember that the sun can do damage to your skin, and if your tattooed, not only are the ultraviolet rays cause for concern regarding sunburn and if prolonged even skin cancer, your ink can be in harm’s way!

“The sun is the number one enemy of your tattoos.”  Tattoo Adam, owner of Waikiki tattoo studio 434 Tattoo shares.

The sun can make your tattoos fade and all that time, money, pain runs the risk of being for not!  But fear not, for there are a number of things you can do.

1. Wear Sunscreen.  This is a given for anyone who will be in the sun for a period of time, tattooed or not.  Sunburn sucks and skin cancer is no joke, so lather up, the higher the SPF, the better.  Don’t worry, health is better than a tan.

2. Cover up.  It might not be cool to wear a shirt at the beach or the park but bring an umbrella, create shade, wear a hat.  Do whatever you can to help your skin.  Your older self will thank you!

3. Don’t go out in peak sun hours.  The peak time for UV rays to wreak havoc on your body is between 10a – 3p.  Do your best to stay out of the sun during the time.  In addition to the heat and the sun’s impact on your skin, your body also dehydrates, so if you’re in the sun during times when it’s not as hot, you will stay hydrated and feel better longer.  Which leads to…

4. Drink water!  Salt water dehydrates.  It’s science or something.  Or if it isn’t, just trust us.  It does.  Factor in that Hawaii is close to the Equator and intense rays and humidity and well, dehydration happens.  Drink water as often as you can.  Remember caffeine dehydrates, so does alcohol, so for every coffee, energy drink, and beer, replenish with water.  You’ll feel better and believe it or not, your skin will be more hydrated…

With that, the ball is in your court, players and playettes!  Take care of yourself, your skin, and both your health and tattoos will be stoked for Life!

See you at the beach and hopefully at our tattoo studio in Waikiki!  We’re open everyday from morning til late in the evening and we are happy to assist you in getting a custom tattoo in Hawaii!

Our tattoo studio in Honolulu, is not a stranger to the news.

Tattoos and Scars and Rumi Tattoos

Originally posted here by our Blog Editor.

A few days ago, I began reading some material by Deepak Chopra, you know, some of that goodness filled with some metaphysical reminders about abundance and how the Universe is Love, the kind of things that I look for in Life and enjoy writing about. On Saturday, I had a very Love enchanted day in variety of ways and just like the title reads: Bullet Scars, Tattoos, and Rumi.

But first:

I Love me some Rumi!

Rumi was one of the crazy Mystic Sufi cats who was all blissed out by Life Itself and seeking out God in everything.  The way that he addresses the Beloved in All Things is amazing to me and a great reminder that even in some of the Darker moments in which we may find ourselves, God and Love are All around, embracing us Always in All Ways, we need only take the time to see.

Now back to Saturday…

I was working one of my many jobs (5 and growing) and a woman walks up with a unique tattooed quote around a scar.  As I looked at it, I saw that “Rumi” followed the quote.  I was a little tickled because I had just been reflecting that morning on a line from Rumi:

There is a field out beyond right and wrong. I will meet you there.

And I thought it was pretty cool that this Lady had a Rumi tattoo.  As a tattoo lover myself, I have a unique relationship with my own tattoos and how they chronicle elements of my own Journey.  “Tattoos are a spiritual medicine.”  Tattoo Adam, Owner of 434 Tattoo, a tattoo studio in Waikiki, once told me.

They are a ritual that reminds me of where I have been, and are also a physical example of how one can heal and have beauty within the memory left behind, even if it comes with a scar.  This woman had a similar reminder for the scar that her Rumi tattoo surrounded was caused from a gunshot.  She did not go into detail about how she was shot but she did talk about how grateful she was to be alive.

“It is a reminder to appreciate every day…”

On Friday, just prior to meeting this woman, I Re-Tweeted Mixed Martial Artist and Former WWE Champion Bobby Lashley, who shared his own story of meeting a War Veteran and how it was a reminder to be grateful.  @fightbobby would tweet me, @jmaw808, and even shared: “How can someone Love with Hate in their Heart.”  I was stoked because earlier in the week I joked about getting tweets from a celebrity as I had received a RT from an up and coming singer, who I tweeted to keep following her dreams, or something along those lines…

To some I may be preachy, to others I have been called too idealistic but I have to say that there is nothing wrong with promoting Love.  If we look all around, we can see that there are so many reasons to welcome Love in All Its shapes and forms.  In my opinion, Love is our Truth and is a necessity that we can no longer afford to ignore.  I was pretty tickled at how the Universe gave me a few unique interactions with people I have never met before, not only in the stories that I shared, but also dancing in the beautiful eyes of two small twins, their beautiful babysitter, Jordan (who was rocking a Henna tattoo),  and a friend from college who has fought her own battles and overcome, and so many more who weave in and out of Life.

It is a beautiful Life when one lets Beauty Be.
