Hawaii Tattoo Convention – Coming this Summer 2015

The 2015 Hawaii Tattoo Convention is right around the corner!

unnamed

Tebori tattoo artist Takashi will be going to the Pacific Ink & Art Expo on August 7, 8, & 9, during his time in Hawaii but you can get your work done or started by him from July 30 at our Waikiki tattoo studio!  Check out what his bio for the Expo has to say about his work:

“Although outlines are still done by machine, this method uses a long bamboo stick, called a nomi, with steel needles arranged in rows, singly or stacked and tied at the end. The tip of the nomi is dipped in ink and pressed rapidly into the skin. This creates some of the finest shading and subtle gradations, giving the tattoos a distinct look from typical machine work.”

434 Tattoo will be Takashi’s home in the lead-up to the event and we’re taking appointments for him now!  Contact us today to learn more and to book your slot!

Tattoos & Clues

The discovery of human remains in New York and the sharp eye of a detective took a case to tattoo artists to help. Read the full story here.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what occurred and who this mystery woman was but the usage of the science and the knowledge of tattoo artists about tattooing and the customs of getting tattooed in different eras took this case a lot further than its beginnings.

Tattoo styles, go through phases, just like everything else.  For example, on the West Coast of the United States, Polynesian tattoos are taking off despite their existence for centuries and cultural tradition in Polynesia.  Americana and old school art is an instance of a style that was popular in different sub-cultures (military & bikers) and are now en vogue with tattoo enthusiasts from all walks of life.

For every two steps forward and two steps back, tattoos for the most part are enjoying a period where more acceptance is taking place.

While we don’t wish any ill will on anyone, one must admit that it is fascinating what our tattoos can say about us. Not only can they have a meaning into the individual lives we live, they can also speak to the greater movements that are in play in the world.

If you’re interested in getting ink and leaving clues behind for the future generations, come on by our Waikiki tattoo studio.  We are open 7 days a week from 10a to 10p and have a talented team led by veteran artist Tattoo Adam Siehr.

Our tattoo ohana is ready to welcome you!  So come on down with your questions, ideas, and interest.  We’re stoked to help!

How to Design a Tattoo Stencil for an Ongoing Tattoo

An oldie but goodie!

Check out Tattoo Adam designing a stencil for a customer in this video shot in our Waikiki tattoo shop 434 Tattoo.

He starts with tracing the arm to design the stencil to fit in the space that the tattoo is going to go.  Once the space is determined, he will begin drawing the stencil out.

In this case, the customer provided imagery to Tattoo Adam.  While that is not necessary, it is helpful when someone has something more specific in mind to the tattoo artist.

Our Tattoo studio in Waikiki has a library of books covering all styles of tattooing, as well as tattoo flash, and our own archive of past works.  Please feel free to swing by and ask for a free consultation.  Our goal is to give you the best tattoo and experience in a Hawaii tattoo shop ever so we’re here to help!

Need a Tattoo Cover Up in Hawaii?

America’s Got Talent Host Nick Cannon covers up tattoo!

The former Mr. Mariah Carey, recently got a new tattoo to cover up old one on his arm, which once honored the now defunct marriage.  He also had another piece about his ex on his back tattooed with a cover up as well.

While people suggested laser, it is reported that the entertainer did not wish to erase the history from his life, merely he wished to put something new to symbolize that he was over what had occurred and was moving on.

Not everyone’s story or reason for getting a tattoo removed or covered up is the same but it’s fairly common for people to get ex-lover’s names, faces, etc. removed or covered up with a new tattoo.

If you are in need of a cover-up, consider coming to 434 Tattoo our Waikiki tattoo studio.  Led by Tattoo Adam and his 20 plus years of experience, our team has seen just about everything and has experience working in multiple styles of tattooing.

We specialize in Custom tattooing, which provides the client with a totally unique piece, and our work is perfect for doing a cover-up.  We are open 7 days a week from 10a-10p.  Come on by with your chosen picture or design or feel free to look through our library of books and tattoo flash.

Tebori Tattoo Artist in Hawaii

Screen shot 2015-03-01 at 1.38.11 PM

Tebori tattooing is the traditional Japanese style of tattooing by hand.

20140404_131656

It was how the masters of old created intricate bodysuits and more depicting Japanese legends and beliefs.  Though the tattoo machine has grown in popularity over time, tebori is still a meaningful and relevant practice, with far fewer artists practicing the tradition.

Guess what?  Though it would be cool if you did, you don’t have to go to Japan to get tebori because Tattoo Adam, also known as Horiyume, practices tebori in 434 Tattoo our Waikiki Tattoo studio!

A few years back, with the help of some members of 434 Tattoo Ohana, a private space (pictured) was created to allow for traditional japanese tattoo sessions.  If you are interested in tebori and would like to learn more about getting a tattoo in this style, please feel free to contact us at the number or email below.  We’d be more than happy to assist you with any and all of your tattoo questions and needs!

Tattoos for Life & Beyond

Researchers have discovered that the famous Otzi the Iceman has even more tattoos than originally believed!

Scientists have studied the approximately 5400 y/o mummified body since its discovery and using new technology, discovered 4 new tattoos, which means Otzi has 61 different tattoos!

The tattoos are small lines in areas that it is believed may have been the man during his life.  It is thought that the cultural of the practice of the time included inking different points within the body to alleviate the pain.  Otzi lived in the mountains and a lifetime of trudging up and down, amidst the cold, took its toll on his joints, knees, and back.

On a surprising note, the new ink was discovered along his ribs, which lead the research team to speculate that perhaps he suffered from some internal injury or problem with an organ.

Been trying to share with people for a minute now that tattoos are a good for the mind, body, and spirit!  This new discovery further validates the healing role of tattoos in older cultures.

So come on down and get your healing on in Waikiki tattoo studio.  Open from 10a – 10p, every day of the week, we have a team of talented, experienced tattoo artists that can bring your ideas to life.  Who knows, maybe someone will be studying your ink 5,000 years from now?  Just kidding. Or are we?  Either way, we’ll ink you up nice and proper!
