How to get a tattoo in Hawaii

It’s important that when you start your tattoo journey to pause and meditate a bit before getting a piece because if you get something with meaning, chances are it will stand the test of time and grow with you. Note: if for some reason you did that and outgrow your tattoo or that phase of life, we got you! Our team of talented Hawaii tattoo artists specialize in custom tattoos our of our Waikiki tattoo studio.

So what can you do beforehand to make sure your piece lives with you for the rest of your journey? Take your time and research. With each passing year, technology connects us more and more, whether we like it or not! Take advantage of the tools and look and see what you like, figure out what speaks to you, and save or take screenshots of ideas you like and artists who have styles you’d be stoked to wear for the rest of life.

Once you’ve decided on something that speaks to you and have figured out who you’d like to work with, schedule an appointment to talk to the artist. While walk-ins are always welcome, you will be able to maximize time and attention from your artist if you call ahead and schedule a time to talk about your piece, especially if you’re looking for a custom tattoo.

After your consultation is scheduled, show up! There’s nothing worst than ghosting anyone, but you really don’t want to do that to your tattooist, who has blocked the time for you, time that could also be spent with their loved ones or better yet, tattooing!

Once you’ve met, and if you vibe, listen. If you go in thinking you know how things are going to go down, unless you’re a tattoo artist yourself, chances are you don’t really know much about what you’re talking about. Your artist is a professional and all of our artists in our Hawaii tattoo shop are licensed and certified to tattoo. Even our apprentices operate under the guidance of an experienced tattooer. Long story short, your artist, and our team have your best interest in mind because it’s in her or his best interest to have everything go amazing. You’re going to rep her or his art wherever you go once you walk out that door and that’s something that s/he will take very seriously.

From there once you’ve got it figured out, work with the artist to understand the story about what you’re doing together. What’s the process of the artist, what do they like about it, what lessons do they have to share that your piece brings to mind while you’re working together. You never get an answer if you don’t ask and sometimes, you don’t know the questions you really want to ask until you start talking.

Then from there, it’s time for the fun part – getting inked! So sit back and enjoy it because Life should be enjoyed.

And if you have any questions, stop by our friendly shop at 434 Ena Rd.

A hui hou!

What to expect when getting a tattoo?

There are many reasons people get tattooed.  And everyone, is a first-timer at some point in their tattoo journey.  Whether it’s a one & done experience or tattoo collecting for a lifetime, it is still important to have an idea of what to expect when you are going to get a tattoo.

Here are some general expectations and etiquette that are good for anyone to know!

  1.  Have an idea.  Just telling your artist that you want a tattoo is going to get you nowhere.  You absolutely have to have an idea so that the artist can guide you in choosing a style, a template, flash, or in her/his own efforts to create a custom tattoo for you.
  2. Have more than an idea?  Bring pictures.  A picture will help further refine the idea that you like.  Telling your artist you want a bird and knowing what type of bird, how it looks, will go a long way in creating a satisfying piece.
  3. Make an appointment.  Though walk-ins are always welcome at most shops, if you want to guarantee your space and time, an appointment will go a long way.
  4. Listen and be respectful.  Your artist is a skilled professional who has put in years and hours upon hours to be where they are at.  They know more about the art and its placement on the human body than your novice eyes.  If they tell you something about where a piece will look best, they know.
  5. Take care of the tattoo.  You spent money, time, and energy in getting a tattoo.  Your artist worked hard.  Listen to what s/he has to say about tattoo after-care and take care of it.  While touch-ups are often free, a properly cared for tattoo will heal great and last.

These are just a handful of general tips to factor in along your tattoo journey.  Now let’s get you inked!  Our Waikiki tattoo studio is open 7 days a week, 10a – 10p.  Walk-ins are welcome, appointments guarantee your space, and we offer free consultations.

Asian Tattoo Specialists in Hawaii

Japanese Tattoo by Tattoo Adam Horiyume

A great influences over Tattoo Adam (Horiyume) and his work is Asian Tattoos. Having received tattoos and insight from the legendary Japanese tattoo master Horiyoshi III. The result of his passion and interest in this distinct style of the art form has led to refining his own original custom tattooing vision.

“The best part of tattooing is when the client walks away stoked with something original and truly custom, that is unique to that person.” Adam shares.

Part of the unique experience in getting an original Asian tattoo, is the story and meaning behind it.  The placement, the direction, the piece itself contribute to the story being told with tattoo, and it is important because the tattooist can be director that brings that vision to life.

“Often I’ll see it when I look at the blank canvas of the skin.” He continues.

To see some of those stories and more of Horiyume’s work, check him out on Instagram (@horiyume_tattooadam).  To schedule an appointment, check out our contact info below. We are open 7 days a week, from 10a to 10p and are here to help that vision come to life at 434 Tattoo, our Waikiki tattoo studio!

New Waikiki Tattoo Happenings

url
Horiyume with one of his famous clients, Mike Tyson

What up Hawaii Tattoo Lovers!

2016 is rolling along and we’re excited to work on some big custom tattoo pieces!

Along with the excitement we have some awesome news, Tattoo Adam (Horiyume) is now available full-time at our tattoo shop in Waikiki 434 Tattoo! This is a great time to start a new tattoo with him as we close out the Winter Season and to take advantage of his increased availability.

Why start thinking about inking now? Why not! Nah, joke, here’s a few tips to consider:

  1. Tattoos are priced and constructed based on the hours it will take to complete. For larger pieces and pieces in complex area of the bodies, more time will be necessary to complete the tattoo.
  2. Adding a little color? While some tattoos (depending on the size) can be completed in one sitting from one to three hours, larger more intricate pieces actually take a considerable amount of time longer. Many backpieces have 24 or more hours, that’s over a days worth of work put into them! For the client’s sake and health, it’s often best to break that up into smaller sessions.
  3. You’re not the only person getting tattooed. A tattoo artist books in advance because shops will often have multiple customers a day (think any other situation where you see someone by appointment) as well as walk-ins. While we want to ink you 24/7, it isn’t always realistic and we want to be sure to offer the best service to all who walk through the doors of our Waikiki Tattoo Shop!

Now come on down and share your next great idea with us. Our artists love to create original custom tattoos and are here to serve us.

Christmas Ideas – Give the Gift of Tattoo

Tree.jpg

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Christmas is less than 2 weeks away and rather than fight massive mall crowds at Ala Moana Shopping Center, why not consider taking a stroll a short bit away to our Waikiki tattoo studio.  You can get a tattoo gift certificate for a loved one or even gift yourself with a brand new tattoo!

The talented team here at one of Hawaii’s best tattoo studios has a diverse skillset and years of experience.  Led by Tattoo Adam (Horiyume), we pride ourselves in taking care of our clients with great serviced & artwork!

What fun is getting a cool piece of ink if the experience of it sucks, right?

Hailing from Milwaukee, Adam cut his bones in an old school apprenticeship and has accumulated 23 years in the tattoo industry, with years before that practicing a variety of art styles.

We are also often host to a number of talented international tattoo artists and on site we have Korean Tattooist Macho & Japanese Tebori tattoo artist Takashi with us.  A once in a lifetime tattoo can be acquired at this time should you take advantage and book a session with a guest artist when they are in town.  Who knows where you might find them next!

We are open 7 days a week, from 10a – 10p.  Come on down and get your ink on with the homies here at 434 Tattoo!

Star Wars, Tattoos, & Apprentices

The world, particularly the internet, has been a buzz with the new Star Wars movie that is coming out on Dec. 18.  Seems like every day there’s some new piece of news, seconds of footage, & more that has audiences hungering for the Force to be with them. Wonder if there will be an influx of people with new Star Wars tattoos?

Something about Masters, Jedi & Sith alike, and their apprentices, eh?

Snapchat-1671604485625014969

Speaking of apprenticeships, Horiyume Tattoo Adam has had a number of people aspire to apprentice and become tattoo artists but only a handful have ‘graduated’ and become full-fledged tattootists.  It’s a tough process that requires hard work, dedication, artistic interest, & talent.

“I was brought up in the old school tattooing world so I teach that along with the current methods.” Adam shares.

Meet Tiff Domingo. A Kauai native by way of Oregon & Pennsylvania, with stops across the continental US along the way, Tiff’s been with our Waikiki Tattoo Shop ohana since August of this past year and got licensed with the state in July of this year.

Tiff has been working hard to make it in her apprenticeship and is currently on the journey.  Pictured above, you’ll find Tiff undertaking one her apprenticeship tests: putting a tattoo on herself under the watchful eye of Horiyume.

Tiff likes & aspires to create new traditional pieces, sacred geometry tattoos, 3-D biomech tattoos, and portrait tattoos. She is currently working on developing her flash in addition to her duties at the shop.  To follow Tiff’s progress and see some of her art, check out her Instagram @tiffany024.

We are pulling for Tiff to rise up in the ranks of tattooing.  Under the guidance of Adam’s two plus decades in the tattoo industry, the sky could be the limit.

For any tattoo questions or needs, contact us at our Waikiki tattoo shop, one of Hawaii’s best tattoo shops, 434 Tattoo!
