When Not to Get a Tattoo

We are pro-tattoos!  We are a Hawaii Custom Tattoo Studio afterall and it would make sense that we are all favor freedom of expression and inking your body.  With that, we are all for responsible tattooing.  If you get something, you have to think of a way to live it.  You might be able to cover-up a piece from time to time (which our crew specializes in since we do anything custom) but some pieces just don’t work out…

Over the years, especially with the advent of the internet, tattoo artists as a whole of been getting a bad rap because of the actions of a few out there.  We have shared tattoo news from around the world here on the official blog for our Waikiki Tattoo studio, so you might recall a few of them.

Like the man who tattooed his dog… or the woman who tattooed her tattoo artist boyfriend’s name on her face right after meeting him.  It’s quite a world out there and we’re not here to judge but again, we do think it’s important to ink responsibly, which is why our talented Hawaii Tattoo Artists are all licensed and act in accordance to the Hawaii State Department of Health and the State of Hawaii Laws relating to tattoos.

So we have to ask the question: Is Google about to ink responsibly?  A new technology that Google has put in to work, a removable electronic tattoo on the throat, can apparently tell when people are lying.  Lying certainly isn’t cool but that sounds a bit much from the the biggest brother on the internet…

Just saying.  Anyhow, think twice before you do something you regret with your body and if you have any questions, come see one of the tattoo professionals at our  tattoo studio in Honolulu.  We offer free consultations on all tattoos and are open 7 days a week.

The Sun and Your New Tattoo

The Sun and your New Custom Tattoo do not necessarily go hand-in-hand, especially in Hawaii.  Here at our Hawaii Custom Tattoos Studio, the award-winning tattoo shop 434 Tattoo, we have people very interested in how the sun and the ocean will impact their newly inked pride and joy!

“The sun is your the enemy of your skin and your new tattoo.” Tattoo Adam, Owner and Tattooist, has shared with many customers over the years.

A few tips for protecting your skin and ink from the Sun:

If you just got inked, stay out the sun, the ocean, and pools for at least 2 weeks.  3 weeks is even better!  The ocean harbors countless numbers of microorganisms waiting to take up residence in your body and your fresh flesh!  You’re going to want to keep a light layer of lotion, ointment, etc. over your new tattoo to keep it moisturized and the sun will surely dry that up so again, at least 2, if not 3 weeks no sunning or swimming!  So you might want to go in the ocean as much as you can before getting that new custom piece…

Use the highest amount of SPF that you can.  If you’re going in the water, get a waterproof sunscreen and don’t be afraid to apply more.

Keep your tattoos covered up.  The better you take care of your skin, so less exposure to the harmful UVs, the better off your new tattoos will be.

Now that you have the information on how to care for your skin and your tattoo, you’re ready to go, or come in!  All consultations are free, appointments preferred, walk-ins always welcome!

We hope to see you soon in our Honolulu Tattoo parlor located near the famous Waikiki Strip and Ala Moana Beach Park.

This picture of the Dude above was too epic to pass up! It is of a gentlemen rocking a face tattoo well into this elder statesmen years!  Facial tattoos are nothing new, though not so widespread or accepted in the West, but a popular form of Polynesian tattoos particularly amongst the Maori people in New Zealand.

The tattoo pictured above is a design that was done last year by Hawaii Custom Tattoo Artist, Tattoo Adam, the owner of our Waikiki Tattoo Studio, 434 Tattoo. You can read more about this style of tattoo here.

And finally for your WTF Wednesday video, we present our Editor’s attempt at an inspirational video.  Find the comedy in it folks and note that a different book is coming out… He’s going to give us copies at our tattoo shop in Honolulu so you’ll be able to scoop that up some day too and have something to read while getting your next custom tattoo.

Tattooed in Hawaii Q & A: How Safe are the Inks?

There is a question that comes up from time to time and it is logical why people would ask it:

How safe are the inks?

For newcomers getting tattooed in Hawaii (or wherever for that matter), safety is a very reasonable concern.  Our Honolulu Tattoo Artists undergo extensive training, testing, are both certified and licensed by the State of Hawaii Department of Health, and are more than willing to answer any questions about safety or any questions about your new tattoo for that matter.

Which brings us back to the issue of how safe is tattoo ink?

Today, tattoo ink is very safe because there are expiration dates, all ingredients are listed on the newer inks, and companies keep track of each batch.  For example,Eternal Tattoo Supplyis sure to have a lot number in addition to the previously mentioned items that are listed.  All ingredients in the ink are required to be approved by the Health Administration and meet safety standards in accordance with various laws.

This wasnʻt always the case though, as ink formerly had Mercury in it.  In time, people had reactions to the Mercury and things have since changed.

One other thing that has changed relating to ink: in the past, Custom Tattoo Artists could by bags of powder and mix their own inks.  If you mixed your ink properly, it could last you a lifetime!  Supply companies wised up along the way and realized they could make more money by selling only the ink it would seem.

Thank you for your questions and concerns about tattooing and safety.  Be sure to visit us online and in the shop for any other concerns and to learn more about the custom tattoo process!  Our tattoo studio in Waikiki is located at 434 Ena Road and we are open 7 days a week from 10a to 10p by appointment but walk-ins are always welcome!

434 Tattoo on Location: Hawaii Tattoo Convention

20120808-191318.jpg

The First Tattoo Convention in Hawaii took place last weekend and local, mainland, as well as international tattooists and tattoo enthusiasts gathered to partake in the festivities. From live tattoo booths to tattoo contests, clothing to cars, even seminars were popping off, this event had a little bit of everything.

Held in Hawaii’s Blaisdell Arena, the 434 Tattoo Ohana, went down to see what the hype was all about. We tried to head down at 600p HST but we kept having people walk in who were looking to get tattooed in Waikiki. At about 930p, we closed shop and made our way down.

From this Editor’s perspective, the venue was huge and laid out very well. Having attended numerous events from car shows, Old Super Brawl fight cards even WWE wrestling back when it still was the WWF, the organizer’s of the event did a pretty good job of for lack of a better word organizing it.

One of the coolest things to see was live traditional Polynesian tattooing session (pictured below). Hawaii is in Polynesia and tattooing has been a large part of the Hawaiian culture ever since, ever since as Fokai likes to say.

An LA tattoo artist, who is well-reviewed and getting a lot of online buzz, ‘Norm Will Rise’, was in the house as well demonstrating his unique brand of lettering and style. If you look for his Instagr.am you may or may not even find a couple graffiti tagsthat he did while out here.

You don’t have to go to LA though for your ink, just stay on the island and look to get tattooed in Honolulu. Our multi-time award winning studio, 434 Tattoo, led by Tattoo Adam have got you all covered…

With ink!

Where to Get Tattooed in Hawaii

We also have the only two survivors of Tattoo Adamʻs old school style of apprenticeship, which he learned growing up in Milwaukee and led him to tattoo in Las Vegas and now here in Hawaii.
