Custom Tattoos For Everyone

Tattoos are everywhere!

sprint-all-in
David Beckham, Sprint’s new spokesperson

From retired international soccer star David Beckham’s campaign with Sprint to new stories of tattooed celebrities popping up[ every day (seriously, a Google search of Tattoo News and you’ll see mention of Kendall Jenner, Ed Sheeran, Rihanna, & Shia LeBouf all sporting new ink this week (8/10-14/2015), tattoos are going mainstream like wildfire!

Open up Instagram and there are constantly photos trending of tattoo conventions, custom tattoo work, tattoo flash sheets & art, as well as new, fresh tattoos all over the feed. Is this a new age of tattoo acceptance?  Or like everything else, is this just a trend where this is what’s popular?
It’s probably a little bit of both. Hopefully, acceptance and tolerance prevails during the next wave for getting inked isn’t so popular.
AND no matter the case, we always practice great tattooing and tolerance of people from all across the board at our Waikiki tattoo studio.  We’re open 7 days a week, rain or shine, though it’s mostly shine in Hawaii, especially this hot ass Summer!  Our team has a diverse background and is led by Tattoo Adam, who has tattooed for over 20 years.

Tattoo Artist Takashi Matsuba will be working a guest spot at our Waikiki Tattoo Studio 434 Tattoo starting from July 30, 2015!  Takashi exclusively practices Tebori, the traditional form of Japanese tattooing.  In recent years, Tattoo Adam, Owner and President of our Hawaii custom tattoos shop created a space dedicated to tebori tattooing.

With Takashi coming to Honolulu as a guest artist at our studio along with taking some time at the upcoming Pacific Ink & Art Expo, this is as close to an authentic, traditional Japanese tattoo experience that you can get outside of Japan! Though most of the outlining of the piece is done with a machine, all of the shading is done with in the traditional handpoking style.

How to Design a Tattoo Stencil for an Ongoing Tattoo

An oldie but goodie!

Check out Tattoo Adam designing a stencil for a customer in this video shot in our Waikiki tattoo shop 434 Tattoo.

He starts with tracing the arm to design the stencil to fit in the space that the tattoo is going to go.  Once the space is determined, he will begin drawing the stencil out.

In this case, the customer provided imagery to Tattoo Adam.  While that is not necessary, it is helpful when someone has something more specific in mind to the tattoo artist.

Our Tattoo studio in Waikiki has a library of books covering all styles of tattooing, as well as tattoo flash, and our own archive of past works.  Please feel free to swing by and ask for a free consultation.  Our goal is to give you the best tattoo and experience in a Hawaii tattoo shop ever so we’re here to help!

Say no tattoo discrimination

20140703_150703
Horiyume (Tattoo Adam) painting an Asian inspired piece.

Came across two very interesting statements circulating the web recently that sparked some thoughts…

“Everybody that isn’t really aware of the newer trends in tattooing is just hung up on the stereotype that they’re shady and for bikers or gang members, just very seedy overall,” says Jerry Cross in an article about the opening of a new tattoo studio he owns with a few friends.

Another statement that catches the eye is the following headline:

Brad Pitt: I don’t want my daughters to get tattoos

The article is about an interview with his wife, Angelina Jolie, and both very well-known actors have ink.  So it’s a bit interesting to hear that he specifically doesn’t want their daughters to get ink.  She is quoted in the Fox News piece as saying:

“How do I say ‘No’? It’s especially hard for dads and girls,” she said. “For some reason men get a little more sensitive when the daughter gets a tattoo.”

It’s hard to fathom why the statement is aimed at just the daughters and not the sons.  It is easy to see why a parent might not want their child to have the same experiences, especially in the case where someone experienced tattoo discrimination.  But Pitt and Jolie have done pretty well for themselves so it’s doubtful the tattoos are all that bad.

For every step forward the artform takes, it seems like something happens that reinforces those sad, negative stereotypes that just aren’t true of everyone.  There are tons of criminals and assholes who have no ink.

The tattoo isn’t the problem.  There are great people who do alot for their communities who have tattoos. Tattooists are artists and for every stereotype, there are countless numbers of folks who break that mold.

The issue of discrimination runs a bit beyond just skin deep… and that type of ish is just a part of humanity and the problem will exist until we figure out a way to flush it.

But fear not!

Our tattoos here at 434 Tattoo are free from bullshit and our awesome tattoo studio in Waikiki is open 24/7, from 10a to 10p.  We specialize in custom tattooing and can intricately perform a number of styles including Asian tattoos, Hawaiian tattoo designs, & traditional old school tattoos and new school tattoos. We also have many books and tattoo flash available for you to review.

Bring your tattoo ideas and yourself and show solidarity against ignorance and stereotypes and come on down to get your ink on!

Top 5 Places For Aussies to Visit On Oahu

Sunset at Magic Island, Honolulu HI (Picture by: Jason M.A. Walter)
Sunset at Magic Island, Honolulu HI (Picture by: Jason M.A. Walter)

G’day Mate!

Your friends here at one of your favorite Hawaii tattoo studios434 Tattoo, have a fun list to experience Hawaii’s beauty and history for our friends down under to consider while making memories on the island of Oahu.  Enjoy!

1. The North Shore

Australian beaches are no joke but Hawaii is the birthplace of surfing and well, the North Shore of Oahu is equal parts amazing and magical!

This place is breathtaking and be sure to stop in Haleiwa and grab the Hawaiian treat, Shave Ice, to cool off after soaking in the sun (remember, wear sunscreen)!

2. Magic Island

Having gone to the North Shore, you have to spend some time on our South Shore!

Conveniently located near the busy thoroughfares of Ala Moana Shopping Center, Waikiki, and the up & coming Urban Arts District of Kaka’ako, Magic Island is a great place to get in the water, go for a run, have a picnic, enjoy a Sunset (pictured), and more!

Fun Fact: This is a man-made beach.  This part of the island used to be swamp lands back in the day!

3. Iolani Palace

Visit the only Palace in all of America!

Hawaii was once its own Kingdom before an overthrow led by rich, business owners and the annexation by the US took place, which still rankles some locals to this day.

It’s free to walk the Palace grounds and a guided tour is also available to walk through the multi-story dwelling, where you can learn cool tidbits, including the fact that Hawaii had electricity before the White House!

4. The Pali Lookout

Experience Windward Oahu in one amazing view.  You can also feel the spirits that rage on in the winds of this supernatural place that is also home to one of the greatest military massacres in Hawaiian history.  Kamehameha I was successful in uniting the islands and forming the Hawaiian Kingdom but not without casualties as his army drove the opposition off the sharp cliff face!

5. 434 Tattoo

We’re sure we are number one on your list!  After all, we have received the award for Honolulu’s Best Custom Tattooing Studio over the last half-decade!  But we list this last here because we want you to get in the water, enjoy the sun, and save your tattoo for the last day or night you’re here.  We want you to have fun and we also have your tattoo to last!  Remember the sun and water can do alot of damage to a new custom tattoo.

What are you waiting for?  Book your flights from Australia to Hawaii today and come and experience what Oahu has to offer!  We’ll see you when you’re here and ready to commemorate the trip with a Souvenir Tattoo or whatever your Heart desires!

Aloha!

Army Tattoo Protocol in Retreat

The USA Today reported that the Army might change its policies on tattoos to be more accommodating and allow enlisted men and women to become officers after recently implementing stricter policies.  Who would thought the military would be at the leading edge of anti-tattoo discrimination?

The issue which made headlines on the Internet and in the United Kingdom may some day be non-existent, but as evident here in Hawaii, that’s not quite the case.

On the one hand, it’s an Executive’s decision on how to run her/his business.  It is understandable that many businesses want to convey certain looks and feels to consumers with how their employees appear.  But the fact remains that the number of tattooed individuals is growing by the day.  It’s important to create policies in businesses, states, and countries that reflect the will of the people.

If your will is down with a custom tattoo, then come on down because we got ya!

434 Tattoo, 0ur Hawaii tattoo shop, is located at 434 Ena Road and our team of talented artists have decades in the business.  Consultations are free and we’re open every day.

Forget the hype and get inked!

The Custom Tattoo Experience

Screen Shot 2014-08-16 at 12.31.19 PM

Greetings Tattoo Earthlings!

Shoot, what’s up Tattoo Aliens, if you’re out there in Andromeda reading this!

When last we left off, we shared what the word tattoo means, in more ways than one.  Now we want to take it a step further and give your some more context on the custom tattooing experience.

The first step in a custom tattoo is getting a consultation.  At our Honolulu tattoo studio, 434 Tattoo, a tattoo shop located in Waikiki, we offer free consultations on tattoos!

The consultation is very important because it allows you to discuss your ideas for a tattoo with a tattoo professional. You will find everyone under the sun with opinions about tattoo ideas or tattoos in general, but the people best prepared to answer questions, guide you, and help you decide what to get and how it will flow on your body, is a tattooist.

Think about it…

As cool as it was for Grandma to pull out your baby teeth, you’d probably want to go to a dentist as an adult for any questions involving your teeth!

With over 22 years of experience in the tattoo industry, President and Owner of 434 TattooHoriyume Tattoo Adam Siehr, knows a thing or two or many about the different types of tattoos out there.  The whole team here in our Waikiki tattoo studio is well-trained, licensed and prepared to give you proper guidance in getting a tattoo!

Once the consultation is completed and a design is chosen upon, give the artist an opportunity to prepare the art for you.  While you might be able to get a drawing completed and inked in the same day, your tattooer has valuable time and other appointments so it’s something to keep in mind.

Remember, that full-sleeve on your friend or that backpiece on your favorite model is a lot like Rome, not built in a day, and most times, the bigger it is, won’t be completed in a day.  Though it is possible to do a large amount of work in a sitting, there are many variables to factor in, so you might have to be patient.

You can schedule your appointments as close together as you like though it is recommended to let the skin heal for at least 1 to 2 weeks, 2 weeks being a bit more ideal.  Sometimes that isn’t the case.  Just ask Horiyume, who goes to Japan for his work from Japanese tattoo legend Horiyoshi III.

Horiyume will have appointments as close together as every other day in order to maximize the amount of time he has to get worked on while visiting Japan.  Crazy!

As you get your custom piece, just like in Life, enjoy the Journey.  While you can always add different aspects to a tattoo or connect a chest tattoo to your arm sleeve, with each step in the tattoo Journey, you are left with a visual reminder of your Life.

As beautiful as the finished product is, remember to find the beauty in the process because that’s another element that makes your custom tattoo unique.

Once the custom tattoo is completed, you’ll have something that no one else can walk into a shop and say, I want exactly that because no two artists are the same and no stencils will exist.  The Japanese tradition is to give the stencil to the client and while this might not be the practice to give the stencil everywhere, no one else will ever have that stencil on a custom piece because the unique factor is what makes it custom.  While there might be certain universal artistic similarities but you will have unique art for life because repeat, no two artists are the same.

Once again, consultations on tattoos are free here at our Hawaii tattoo shop.  Our shop is open 7 days a week from 10a to 10p.

So come on down and get your ink on!  You will not regret it as its our mission to make this the happiest place around and to leave you satisfied!
