From our Hawaii Custom Tattoos family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Hawaii Tattoo Updates

Finally, the Sun has come back to Gemini.  This Gemini Editor is a bit stoked on that because the cycles of Pisces and Taurus were a bit rough at times…

Return of the Tattooist

You know who, what, why, and when is coming back!?!?!?

Tattoo Adam!!!

Adam and his family will be returning from their adventure in the Philippines next week to Hawaii and our Waikiki tattoo shop.  The entire 434 Tattoo Familia is excited and I’m sure all of our friends are stoked for his return as well.  While Adam is probably excited to see everyone too, please be sure to call to set up your appointments because this summer season is already busy and with Adam’s return, it will only pick up!

Did Someone Say Food Truck?

In addition to plying his trade as a Custom Tattoo Artist in Hawaii, our team member, Marko Livingston, is hard at work on some other artistic ventures.  You can find some of his handcrafted work, which is available for purchase on Etsy.

And coming soon to a corner near you…

The Tropical Tribe lunchwagon!  Marko started tagging this exciting new meals on wheels machine last week and should be finishing it up soon.  To get a sneak peek, stop on by Jazz Minds Cafe, to see Marko’s work in the lot.

And in Other News

Doubledown celebrated his birthday earlier in the Month and to mark the occasion he tattooed himself!  It’s not the first time he tattooed himself but he did have a few comments to share after doing the deed.

“I think it hurts a little less because I can ease up if it gets too sore.  When someone else tattoos you, they don’t know what you’re feeling as it’s going on.”

Ouch!  Well, the Dude is almost suited so it’s safe to say he enjoys tattooing and getting tattooed.

Joe Moore Moment

“And finally, did you know…”  To borrow from long-time Hawaii News Anchor Joe Moore at the end of his broadcast “That we had the Eric Minugh, son of an Old-Timer drop in?”

Lee Roy Minugh is an Old School Tattoo Artist and Eric stopped by to share some pics of his Dad and Tattoo Flash.  Eric shared stories of how Lee Roy got to do a Tattoo live on The Today Show years ago and also tattooed the numbers on monkeys who were used in research.

“He got bored with numbers so he started putting roses and other designs on them.”  Eric shared.

With that, you should drop in and get some monkeys and roses tattooed on you!  We are open 7 days a week from 10a – 10p.

See you soon!

Shout Out to the New Skool

A special shout out to Doubledown, apprenticing Hawaii Tattoo Artist, Helicopter Pilot, Boat Captain, and all around stand-up guy.  He is celebrating his success as Tattoo artist and today also celebrates his birthday!

Pictured above:  Tattoo Adam’s Dad, Tattoo Andrew, Tattoo Adam, Marko Livingston, and Doubledown in front of Hawaii Tattoo Studio, 434 Tattoo.

Congrats Homie!  The family says to chop it up!

And you should ink it up, Doubledown’s style is evolving but he definitely can be a leader of the New Skool in the years to come should he continue to work hard and grow.  Our Waikiki tattoo parlor is open 7 days week from 10a-10p.

Hawaii Tattoo Weekly: Home Alone

Tattoo Adam has left the building!  Was this his last Custom Tattoo forever?

Who knows how long he’ll be gone or if he’ll come back from the jungles of the Philippines…  What does it mean for our Tattoo Artists at our Waikiki tattoo shop, who are at Home Alone!

Marko’s Mark

Hawaii Tattoo Artist Marko Livingston has a number of items for sale online here on Etsy, including handcrafted pieces made from Top Secret bone found where only he knows…

Be sure to check out the page and be on the lookout for new things including: t-shirts, stickers, cell phone cases, skateboards, and more!

If you want to see Marko’s other artwork up close and personal, find him here at 434 Tattoo, online, or who knows, maybe he’s next to go to the Jungle!!!

Doubledown’s Corner

Doubledown has been tearing it up, the first day Adam was gone, he did 8 tattoos!  “I got the feeling of my hands being really sore, tight, after a full day of tattooing, it was awesome!”  He shared, the experience of growing as an apprentice Tattooist still exciting for him.

He has also been hard at work developing new Tattoo Flash, some of which you will soon see on a skateboard in in our Honolulu Tattoo shop soon.

Andy’s Ride

Andy’s been tearing it up Easy Rider style on the Harley while also getting back on the mat.  In another life, he may have been a professional Fighter.  You’ll have to ask him in person if he really used to train because he’d choke me out or arm bar me or roundhouse kick me if I were to say that in fact he did no such thing.  So I’m only implying…

In Closing…

Stay tuned for more happenings, updates, more, and if anything to see how the show goes on without the Captain at the helm!  We are open from 10a-10p, 7 days a week, rain, shine, floods, hail, and tornados (all of which we’ve had in Hawaii in the last year)!

On Behalf of the team, we miss this guy:

Custom Tattoo Stories: The 5am Kitchen Apprenticeship

Every job has it’s fair share of funny stories. And if you do something long enough, you have so many that they don’t always come to mind unless, you’re in the moment…

Tattoo Adam has been a Custom Tattoo Artist for almost two decades and the other day, while doing custom tattooing out of his Waikiki tattoo studio, 434 Tattoo, we had such a moment.

Note: I have seen Adam tattoo a number of people now over the last year, not including watching him work on me and it’s amazing to see quickly he works and his mastery of the tattoo machine.  I even witnessed one young woman freak out during a session and fall out of her chair (don’t worry she was fine, just dramatic) and Adam quickly moved the machine away to keep her from getting hurt.  But I have often wondered if anyone has ever moved or kicked during a tattoo and/or gotten tattooed in a place s/he did not intend because of involuntary movement.

So I asked him.

And he answered my question with a question himself: “Did I ever tell you the 5am Kitchen Apprenticeship Story?”

During Adam’s apprenticeship, he had to do all sorts of tattoo and non-tattoo related things.  Part of an tattoo apprenticeship includes doing what is asked by your Mentor.  Just ask Doubledown, who’s had to cut his hair, sing songs at Karaoke, and even eat because he’s “looking too skinny.”  It was no different for Adam.

“So one morning at 5am, I get a call from my Mentor, Tattoo Artist John Cervantes, and he’s yelling, “Kid, get the gear and get over here.” So I went down and grabbed what he told me to, a single needle liner, and went over to his fiancé’s house to see what it was all about.”

Turns out that John wanted a tattoo.  No biggie right?  Nothing new for a Tattooist to want or get tattooed…  Here’s the catch, he had been out drinking the night before and hadn’t slept.

“The whole time I was working on him, he was moving forward because he was falling asleep so I’m tattooing with him.”

2.5 hours later: “We finished and there was a lesson in it.  He only told me to bring a single needle liner but that’s how I learned to shade an area with a single needle liner…”

The moral of the story, hmm, do what you’re asked or find a teachable moment in any experience or shoot, just laugh and enjoy because that’s a pretty awesome story!

Our Hawaii tattoo studio is open 7 days/week from 10a-10p every day.  Enjoy!

When Did You First Tattoo?

It’s never too late to get a new custom tattoo!

At 434 Tattoo, our Waikiki Tattoo parlor, we have four talented Hawaii tattooists including Tattoo Adam (and his 2 decades of experience), Marko Livingston, Andy Burley, and Karl Doubledown Juthans who can assist you in getting the next or maybe even you first tattoo!

Speaking of first tattoos, this Editor decided to poll a few people and see when they got their first tattoo, including the men of 434 (calendar with Andy and his new Harley on the Cover coming soon).  We’ll do this chronologically for sh!ts and gigs…

Coming in first at the age of 13 y/o is Marko Livingston.  Don’t worry all you legal eagles, he ‘handpoked’ himself.

Zach, a loyal customer and frequenter of our fine establishment, also got his ink around this time, having gotten his first tattoo in a garage while in the 9th grade.  He hid it because his Dad told his family growing up no tattoos until they were 18.  As soon as he hit 18, he went and got one for all the world to see!

Tattoo Adam himself got tattooed at the 16, he would shortly join the industry as an apprentice at the age of 17, and go on to tattoo people from all walks of life, all around the world, including the infamous ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson.

This writer got his first tattoo at the age of 30, a ribcage, arm sleeve, chest piece, back piece later and well, it’s safe to say I love it!  Our friend Jacob, got his first tattoo a few months ago here at our Honolulu Tattoo studio, at the age of 54!  High Five to you buddy for continuing with a tattoo every week since it seems!!!

Note: Andy was not available for comment.  You’ll have to ask him yourself.

No minors were injured or inked during the writing of this blog!

Hawaii Tattoo Shop : News

Greetings Hawaii Tattoo Enthusiasts!  Just wanted to send you some updates and happenings from around the way and the block and so forth coming live out of our Honolulu Tattoo shop, 434 Tattoo.

Tattoo Adam is Leaving the Building!!!

Adam and his family will be leaving the islands for a vacation to Arlita’s homeland from May 8th-28th.  With the way Adam’s been talking, it might even be forever…  Who knows?  Get your sessions in or buy your plane tickets to the Philippines.

But we’ll still have the rest of our team of talented Tattoo Artists on tap and ready and here’s some more news about them!

Marko’s Going Old Skool Tattoo

Marko Livingston, an accomplished tattooist and artist in multiple genres, is working on developing his water colors.  An artist dedicated to perfecting his abilities, he is currently working on learning water color the right way.  Taking some Sailor Jerry Tattoo Flash and doing it in the traditional fashion.  In the old days, they only had certain amounts of colors.

Doubledown Tats is Going Up!

Doubledown is making great leaps, and strides in his tattoo apprenticeship.  He’s been working his way through the APT tattoo manual quickly.  And it makes sense, the Dude’s like Macgyver and…

Because of Doubledown, we offer the only Hawaii Helicopter and Tattoo Special anywhere!

That’s right, you rent the helicopter and Doubledown, who is also a licensed helicopter pilot, will fly you to your yacht (he also can pilot boats, we’re serious about all of this), and he will give you a custom tattoo.

And in Obscure News

Andy Burley got walked in on while using the bathroom.  “I yelled, Dude, someone’s in here.  He didn’t listen.”

So there you have it, some more news, views, and more from 434 Tattoo.

Custom Tattoo Stories: Doubledown Tats… Himself

Doubledown has just taken the custom tattoo experience to the next level by tattooing himself!

“It hurts more to bend over to the area than the actual tattoo.” Tattoo AdamOwner of our Honolulu Tattoo Studio, 434 Tattoo, talking about his experience tattooing his leg.  Every artist tattoos themselves at least once but… “I have met artists who don’t have any tattoos on their body!”

“That’s a bit freaky.  If I came into a tattoo shop and I noticed an artist had no tattoos and I asked if s/he had any, I probably wouldn’t get tattooed by them.  If you’re not willing tattoo yourself, how can you  be willing to sacrifice someone else’s skin? ” Waikiki Tattoo Artist, Andy Burley (tattooed himself 3x).  “If you’re not confident in your ability to tattoo yourself, how can you be confident in tattooing someone else?”

Hawaii Tattoo Deals: The Double Down Discount

If you hear the conch shell, than you’re in luck, it means that The Doubledown Discount is live and in full effect at our Waikiki Tattoo Studio, 434 Tattoo!

But Doubledown is up to the task and is taking on all comers with his new special.  So come on in, ask for the Conch Shell and get any tattoo that fits in the palm of your hands for $60.  Perfect for those looking for that smaller memorable custom tattoo piece you’ve been searching for.
