Aloha!

Happy Holidays! Get Your Ink This Season!

Well the world didn’t end…

Once again we here at 434 Tattoo our Hawaii Custom Tattoos studio want to wish you a very Happy Holiday season!  Be sure to catch our great Honolulu Tattoo Deals like the one on Yelp!  We also have a number of gift certificates available that will make great gifts for your family, friends, or even yourself!

The Holidays tend to bring out the best and the worst in people.  And in some cases, there are people who end up stuck in the worst their whole lives.  It’s interesting in many ways because if you scrape beneath the surface, you can find that their misery stems into all aspects of their lives.  Hopefully we can remember to spread the cheer each and every day.

In addition to spreading cheer, you might want to consider a custom tattoo that promotes your own well-being because then you will have some more cheer.

At our Waikiki Tattoo Shop, we strive to give our customers the best experience and to make them happy.  Though there may be a critic here and there, the overwhelming majority of our clientele are stoked and keep coming back.

Hawaii Tattoo Artist and Waikiki Tattoo Shop Owner Tattoo Adam has been in the game for over two decades and takes the time to give free consultations and work with his customer to ensure a quality experience.  Be sure to ask for Adam if you have any questions or concerns because he will be sure to address any of your issues.

Check out this video of Adam consulting with a customer in our Hawaii Tattoo Studio:

Tattoo PSA: Importance of Getting Tattooed Professionally

At our Oahu Tattoo shop, 434 Tattoo, all of our Hawaii tattooists are certified and undergo training in order to tattoo you.  We do this because we strive to provide the best service and to ensure that you get the best product out there!

In life, many people try to cut corners for a variety of reasons and tattooing is no exception.  While you might save some money or help a buddy practice, it’s better to be safe than sorry.  In a recent article, Reuters reported that Amateur tattoos may carry a higher risk of Hepatitis C infection.  Another common side effect of amateur tattooing, is improper after-care which leads to an infection, and in some cases a hospital visit.

So while we are in the tattoo industry and don’t refute our bad-assness, we also want to make sure people are educated about this art that we love and take the best care of themselves.

This Tattoo Public Service Announcement has been brought to you by Friends of Tattoo Adam 2012!  Check out our award-winning Honolulu Custom Tattooing shop three years running at 434 Ena Rd.  We’re open everyday from 10a-10p!

A Story Told in Ink: Are you ready?

“Are you ready?” Tattoo Adam asks me as I lay face down on the table.  I wasn’t expecting to get the custom tiger tattoo stencil in our Waikiki Tattoo Studio that day, I thought I was just going to be seeing it.  Somewhat of a whirlwind later, there I am, face down on the table, a giant tiger about to be put on my back.  And I find myself asking the question that I have asked over and over again: what am I doing with my life?

And what a whirlwind it’s been.  The first tattoo I ever wanted was a tiger going across the top of my back.  This was when I was 20 or 21.  I wouldn’t get my first tattoo until I was 30 because I went into the “professional world” and mingled in politics and all types of things and services because I thought life was all about helping and serving others.  Before I knew it, my 20’s were over as was a large portion of the rest of my life because of some events that were beyond my control, but it seems, that Life was saying, JMAW, you’re ready.  But ready for what, right?

I was always interested in the Spiritual realm and each tattoo I have has a story, tells something about my spiritual journey up until this point and I’m guessing will continue to do so throughout my life.

I hear the buzz of the machine, it’s hypnotic, but as I lay there, I was asking myself what am I doing because I don’t if I’m ready…  But before I can answer the questions, I feel the burning sensation of the needle.

Sensations shoot throughout my body, wondering what I’m doing and why I’m doing it.  I recalled last summer, meditating and seeing a tiger come out of a cave.  I’d had a dream many years ago of entering a cave alone and all that I could see were the many eyes staring back at me. When my life went a little “off” I knew it was time to do the Inner Work, take my spiritual walk if you will, before I could go back to “business as usual” as UFC President Dana White likes to say.

So I prayed, I meditated, I learned to trust my intuition.  Each tattoo a reminder, a ritual form of healing.

“Should I talk?”  I ask, trying to distract myself from the feeling of the needle hitting the nerve endings along my spinal cord.  “No, just enjoy every minute of it…”  Adam replies.

My first tattoo was on my ribs, a reminder to live from a place of love and not fear.  I had a dream of a lion in its place that night and two more sessions later on that area adding lion tattoos, I figured, okay, I can keep doing it because it’s like that song, the first cut is the deepest you know and I chose to go really painful first in order to ease along later [I know, idiot, right?]

There were alot of other life lessons and so on mixed in but learning to go the route of living from love and not fear certainly helped in dealing with the unexpected which will surely arrive.  Kind of like this tattoo, Adam was like Life, telling me I was ready, even though I didn’t know if I was, just like that unexpected bundle of joy or whatever that shows up in our daily lives.

Because that’s it, you know?  You gotta keep moving forward through what comes because if it’s there, you’re ready for it.  At the start of each tattoo session, during, and at the conclusion, I marvel at how I know the pain won’t last, and what’s in it’s place is awesome. Just like the pain of life, when a wound heals, the scar can be a beautiful reminder.

In what was intensely long and now as I write, so far away, I realize I’m ready.  I’d had a number of dreams of a tiger crawling down my neck.  I suppose it knew it’s place all along was at my back as it exited the cave, the rabbit hole, the Matrix, the yada yada yada that my spiritual musings and meanderings have been.

And now I’m back. Not like The Terminator “I’ll be back” style but like literally, new career, new lease on life.  I’m going to appreciate this because the waves rise and fall man, and life will have more challenges and adversity in store, that’s just the nature of it…

Big Thx to Tattoo Adam and 434 Ohana for welcoming me on as the Blogger/Writer and helping me piece together elements of this crazy, wonderful journey.

Hawaii Tattoo: The State of the Economy and Service

Now’s a great time to get in there for your brand new custom tattoo!  Our talented teams of tattooists are happy to help you stimulate the economy and will give you the best tattoo service out there.

Service is important in the world in general and customer service essential in business.  Having modified our bodies and in turn altered our experience in the world, we enjoy treating people with respect because we know what it’s like to walk into an establishment and feel like a book being judged by its cover.  When you have a visible tattoo, many people interact with you differently.  It’s probably a residual from previous eras, pirates, the military, and who knows. That’s not to say things aren’t changing…

In places like LA, there are over 150 tattoo parlors within a ten mile radius.  That’s like 15 LA Tattoo shops per mile!  Shows like Inked and featuring celebrity tattoo artists like Kat Von D have really helped to expose the world to tattoo culture and embrace the love of ink.

So what do you say?  Sound like it’s time to get that custom tattoo you’ve been waiting for? Yeah, we thought so too!

434 Tattoo, our award-winning Oahu tattoo Studio located in the Heart of Waikiki, Oahu, is open 10a – 10p rain or shine.  Note: If there was snow, we’d be open then too.

Oahu Tattoo: Tattoo Faux Pas

“It’s your right to share a tattoo with someone if you choose to.” ~ Tattoo Adam

At one time, having a tattoo would have been considered faux pas.  In this day and age, with it becoming more and more the norm, here’s some tattoo etiquette for your dome!

Ask to see a tattoo.

It’s the person with the custom tattoo‘s right to share it with you if they choose.  Even if you can see some of it, it’s inappropriate to grab the person, turn their arm or other body part at your discretion, lift up their clothing, etc.  In fact, if you think about it, it’s sexual harassment if you touch another person without their consent and it’s certainly awkward to remove someone’s clothing unless they give their consent.

It’s really strange that people do this because what makes people just think they can go up to a person they don’t know or don’t know well and grab them.  In some places, people get maced. In others, they cane people for things like spitting.

So I ask the question: why, really, why?

This writer recently experienced a number of people grabbing a newly tattooed piece that was worked on by Tattoo Adam of Oahu Tattoo Shop, 434 Tattoo.  One woman went so far as to trace the design with her fingers.  It’s not cool to just start touching someone you don’t really know.

Just a few thoughts there Friends.  Nothing world-changing like T-Pain getting tattooed like he did at our Waikiki Tattoo studio just a year ago but something this writer felt important to share with people.

Hawaii Tattoo: 434 Tattoo, A Year in Review

Another year is winding down at our Waikiki tattoo parlour, 434 Tattoo, and while Lil Wayne or Wiz Khalifa skipped out at our offers to tattoo them, we still had a monumental year since starting this humble online publication but a blink of a year ago (flashback to our first ever post).

In January, we got off to a famous start as Marko inked Grammy Award winning Rap Superstar T-Pain!  T-Pain got the real pain and Marko sketched and did a small piece for him while he was on the island.  And T-, if you want some more pain, Marko’s got you on the Tattoo removal:

Just joking and onto February, Tattoo Adam inked this custom lion tattoo, a sequel to the first piece you’ll see soon enough:

As the Ides of March rolled in, we remembered the Waikiki Tattoo shop, Hart and Huntington, who saw their doors closed.  We wonder who was surprised by the short tenure of the corporate tattoo shop?  In Hawaii, where our Oahu tattoo parlor is located, they say that the rain is a blessing, while April showered, we were showered with a visit from tattooist, Ariano Delano.

May was a big month for us.  Tattoo Adam took off on an adventure in the Philippines, and JMAW, joined the 434 Tattoo Ohana as Blogger/Content Editor.  Here’s his first piece with us:

Oh, wait, meant to put his first written piece, that’s the first custom tattoo he ever had from Tattoo Adam.  June saw our team member, tattoo artist Andy Burley get married by Minister Adam (he wears many hats) and our shop g0t featured in the new island publication, 808 Ink Magazine.  They might have some typos but you can’t mistake the custom ink coutesy of Tattoo Adam.

In July, we had a few laughs courtesy of a cheerleader with some attitude, and were visited by another celebrity as fashion and jewelry designer of Rock’n’Roll Couture, Amal Guessous, stopped by.

August came on down and we explored the world of facial tattoos, polynesian tattoo style and in September, the fun didn’t stop as we started to take you behind the scenes with our Tattoo videos.  Adam and Marko took ‘Center Stage’ and were featured in an Art Show.  We even did a public service announcement about tattoos.

As we entered Fall, October saw us drop a little 411 about the history of the tattoo laws in Hawaii, and we also held our first ever Military Appreciation Month in November.  November was a huge month in general as Hawaii was the site of APEC 2011 and our deals didn’t stop as we offered more appreciation deals to the agencies to come in and get some ink done. What else you ask? Well, Adam and Arlita’s son, Andrew celebrated his first birthday!!!  And we broke into the Google Top Ten in a category which eluded us for some time.  That Google…

Marko even cut a commercial for us!

And that pretty much brings you up to date to December.  It’s been a crazy year and from our crazy (in a good way) crew to yours, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.  We’re looking forward to putting a piece of beauty on you soon.

Asian Tattoo Videos: The Criterion Collection

A few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to sit with Tattoo Adam and hear the impact Asian Tattoos have had in his own journey through life, the Tattoo industry, and ending up in Hawaii.

Here we bring to you another video to add to what they call in the land of “DVDuh” (Zoolander) and Blue Ray as The Criterion Collection.  In this video, Tattoo Adam answers a few more questions about Asian custom tattoos and gets down a little bit more about the meaning of Yakuza tattoos.

We hoped you enjoyed this tattooed delight of a video!

And we know you’ll enjoy your tattoo session with us, 434 Tattoo.  Our Honolulu award winning tattoo shop is open seven days a week from 10a to 10p by appointment and walk-ins are always welcome.  Your consultation at our Waikiki Tattoo studio is free and we are more than happy to help you in creating the best custom tattoo experience possible!
