Tattoo Revisions to Navy Policy

For many years, our blog has shared some the coolest and most controversial news about tattoos from around the world.  Today we learned of a super awesome change to the Navy’s tattoo policies!  Check it out from 13NewsNow!

“The Navy Personnel Command announced revisions to its personal appearance policy regarding tattoos last month.  It will take effect on April 30th of this year.  The Navy proclaimed that it recognizes the prevalence of tattoos, especially with millennials, the generation it is recruiting and wanting to retain.

Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Mike Stevens explained, “We need to make sure that we’re not missing any opportunities to recruit and retain the best and the brightest because of our policies.”

The revisions to the personal appearance policy permit the following:

• Multiple or large tattoos below the elbow or knee, including the wrists and hands.
• One neck tattoo, which includes behind the ear. This tattoo cannot exceed one inch in length or height in either or both directions.

It is important to note that no tattoos are allowed on the head, face (to include the ears) and scalp; and allowable tattoos on the torso cannot be visible when one is wearing his/her white uniform. These revisions also do not change the Navy’s rules concerning the content of tattoos and other body art anywhere on the body.

The Navy’s administrative records specifically state: “Tattoos/body art/brands located anywhere on the body that are prejudicial to good order, discipline, and morale or are of a nature to bring discredit upon the naval service are prohibited. For example, tattoos/body art/brands that are obscene, sexually explicit, and/or advocate discrimination based on sex, race, religion, ethnic, or national origin are prohibited. In addition, tattoos/body art/brands that symbolize affiliation with gangs, supremacist or extremist groups, or advocate illegal drug use are prohibited.”

You can read more about these revisions by clicking here.”

So to all of our friends in the Navy who have been waiting to finish up their sleeves or to get a small tattoo on their necks, come on down! We’d love to ink ya at our Waikiki tattoo studio!

Rules of the Game – Tattoo Etiquette Revisited

Tattoo etiquette might often be overlooked but it is one of the most important things to consider before and after you set foot in a shop.  So here are a few rules of the game to consider as you continue or take your first step along the tattoo journey.

  1. Do your research before even coming into the shop about the tattoo artist and the artwork offered.  Know her/his style of artwork and if that’s the style you want before going into the shop.  If you haven’t done that yet, then our Owner & President, Tattoo Adam says: “Shop around, look at portfolios and get to know the artist.”
  2. Have a clear idea of what you want, look into the subject of artwork, send it to the artist or have it ready to share with the artist before you even come in.
  3. If it’s a really big piece, bring your own towel.  “It’s a custom that traces its roots back to Japan.”
  4. Take care of the tattoo.  Check out 434Tattoo.com for some tattoo after-care tips and ask your artist for info when you’re in the shop. Every artist can tell you their view and many have the info on their cards or printed out for you to take home.  We also sell after-care our Waikiki tattoo studio located at 434 Ena Rd. in Honolulu, HI.

These are just a few of the unspoken rules that are important to factor in any time you are getting a tattoo or looking for something new with a new artist.  Learn the rules, play the game fair, and let us take care of making it beautiful and fulfilling for you.

So come on down and get your ink on!

Tattoos and Age

It’s a strange world that we live in, it is common among some African tribes for small children to undergo body modification and ritual scarification and no laws are in place to mandate such.  The differing values in cultures impact the interpretation of what type of behavior is acceptable.

Earlier this month, a New Mexico man was sentenced for tattooing his 3 year old nephew.  He is being required to serve a period of time in jail, spend time at a half-way house upon his release, and pay for any costs associated with the tattoo removal, psychological services.   Recently in Louisiana, there has been a call for stricter laws and regulations for Tattoo Artists.  The criticism with that is it is producing less-talented Artists.

At our Hawaii Custom Tattoos Shop, all of our Hawaii Tattoo Artists follow the Hawaii Tattoo Laws and are Licensed to tattoo in the State of Hawaii.  In addition to following these standards, Owner Tattoo Adam has a high standard for our team to follow and also makes sure to always employ a talented team of Tattoo Artists.   The client is involved in every step of the process and we offer incentives like free consultations and free touch-ups for Life for our clientele to be happy.

We won’t tattoo a three year olds or animals for that matter, but we will provide quality work and continue to go through great training to give the best in custom tattooing on the island.  Come on down today and see what makes us the four-time Honolulu’s Best Custom Tattooing Shop and one of the Top Tattoo Shops in Hawaii!
