Japanese tattooing is very near and dear to our hearts here at 434 Tattoo, our Waikiki custom tattoo shop.
A few years ago, Tattoo Adamwas recognized by the legendary Japanese tattoo master Horiyoshi IIIwith the name Horiyume, which recognized Adam’s commitment to the art, his years of service, and dedication to improve. One ways that Horiyume does that is by practicing the artform, in multiple fashions.
“Sensei (Horiyoshi III) will practice painting every day to continue working on the art.” Horiyume comments.
If you are interested in getting a traditional Japanese style tattoo in Hawaii, we have multiple options available through Horiyume for you. The experience of getting a traditional Japanese tebori tattoo is but one of example how Horiyume can provides custom Japanese tattoo artwork for clients.
“It’s a bit more relaxing, almost like a massage.” One client remarked in reference to his experience with Tebori.
The sacred connection between tattooing is often lost in today’s popular culture but the roots of our traditions hold value to the holistic being whether they can be seen or not.

Japanese tattoos have long held allure to those of us living in Western civilization.
From association with the honorably, strong Samurai Warriors of the past to the powerful Yakuza figures of more recent years, Japanese culture signifies much to people from all walks of life. Add in the depth and meanings behind the symbols of Japanese tattoos and you have a truly unique artform that transcends time.
With all that going for Japanese tattoo styles, it’s no small wonder why they are so popular!
Over the years, Tattoo Adam, our Owner & Lead Artist of our Waikiki tattoo shop, 434 Tattoo, has seen it all. In his two plus decades of tattooing he has also evolved and cultivated his own, unique custom tattoo style that is heavily influenced by traditional Japanese artwork.
Adam was recently honored by the revered Japanese Tattoo Master Horiyoshi III when he was named Horiyume by the legend. It was a symbol of the time, study, & hard work that Adam put into the craft. Around the same time, Adam began to take his practice of the traditional tattoo methods further by taking up tebori, Traditional Japanese Tattooing.

Long a goal of Tattoo Adam, and inspired further by his recent trip to Thailand and experiences there, Tebori and hand-poking tattoos are on the horizon for the Hawaii Custom Tattoo Shops Owner.
“Last year was a tough year and my vision for the space (pictured above) was clouded, but now I’m ready to go into it.” Adam shares candidly, having faced some trials and tribulations in 2013. Despite the adversity, Adam is as determined as ever to keep evolving and getting better as a custom tattoo artist.
“When I was young, I was drawn to Asian tattoos.” he continues and has often shared. Having frequented Japan and Thailand, Adam has had the opportunity to get tattooed by and learn from such legends in traditional methods as Horiyoshi III, the Japanese tattoo master, and a number of Thai Tattoo Monks, who you can read most recently about in theThai Tattoo Experience series.
“Tebori is something I’ve always wanted to do.” Adam says about the Japanese style of tattooing by hand. For a cool explanation of Tebori, check out this blurb from InkArm.com:
“Tebori is the traditional Japanese style of hand tattooing. It is believed to have risen to prominence in Japan during the 18th or 19th century; as professional tattooists first appeared in the capital city of Edo. Traditionally, the process is done entirely by hand; Even the crafting of the tool took on a special significance. Steel needles were arranged in rows, and tied to a long handle of bamboo which would rest across the thumb of the tattooist’s left hand; with the end of the handle grasped in his right.”- See more here.
