Tattoo News: Beware Bad Ink

We recently did an article on the safety of tattoo inks and wanted to follow that up with some more information that was brought to our attention to keep you, our valued customer and fan, taken care of.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) reported that there has been a number of reports of skin infections and the source has been confirmed and traced back to a bad batch of tattoo ink.  The following quote taken from another article, goes into more detail:

“After an investigation, officials traced the bad tattoo ink back to three different types of Catfish Carl’s Realistic Washes in Arizona. The maker, 4 Forty 4 Tattoo of Tucson then recalled the batches after officials learned they were contaminated with the bacteria behind the skin outbreaks.”

It is important to note that this is an excruciating circumstance, and great precautions are taken to protect the client by your tattoo artists.  Our team in our Hawaii Tattoo shop in particular undergoes extensive training and licensing as mandated by Hawaii Tattoo Laws.  Whether the ink is bad or not, it is also very important that the customer be mindful of proper tattoo after-care.

Something else that the article goes onto to state that you can apply to Life in general can be summed up as:

If you get a bad feeling, you should leave.

Whether it’s a tattoo shop, a relationship, a job, whatever, if you don’t feel so good about something, it’s probably best to “hele on” as they say here in Hawaii.

From your friends here at 434 Tattoo who just want to keep you posted in all the happenings in the tattoo industry, the good, the bad, the ugly, take care, and don’t be afraid to ask your artist questions.

Hawaii Tattoo Shops: 434 Tattoo is Growing

Change is in the air at our tattoo shop in Waikiki, 434 Tattoo, with Doubledown, growing through his apprenticeship and working more, in addition to our three Full-Time Hawaii Tattoo Artists, led by Tattoo Adam, owner of our shop and custom tattooist with 20 years of experience, it was time for a change.

“We picked up an additional space behind our shop,” Adam shares, “and are growing into it.”

Adam is pictured above, literally above on the second level of the new addition.  The space is developing an artist’s station, and may feature a pull-out mat, for people to lay down and get tattooed.  “That’s how it is in Japan.”

The new room has space for two artists on the lower level and one on the upper deck.  “We could have up to 5 artists working at one time.”

With change, comes new opportunity, oftentimes adversity, but that’s just Life isn’t it?

Our Waikiki tattoo parlor, is open 7 days a week from 10a to 10p and is conveniently located at 434 Ena Rd., close to Wailana Coffee House, the military Hale Koa Hotel, and in between the famous Ala Moana Beach Park and Waikiki Strip.  Come on down, say hello, and get your free consultation, ink, and more!

The Life of a Tattoo Artist: The Road Taken…

“If you want to get a tattoo in Hawaii,” A customer says, Adamʻs place is where itʻs at!”

This woman and her husband vacation once yearly in Hawaii, originally from here, both her and her husband are civilian employees with the Federal Government and return home to visit family and friends. A tradition they adopted in the last few years, getting a custom tattoo.

“I love tattooing!” says Tattoo Adam, Owner of Honolulu Tattoo Parlor, 434 Tattoo. In what has become 20 years of tattooing this year, Adam has inked all across the US, traveled around the world to tattoo, and has seen his fair share of things while being a part of the tattoo industry. Itʻs hard not to think of Adam and tattoos going hand in hand, but he wasnʻt always a Custom Tattooist. And oftentimes, many people like to ask the question:

How to become a tattoo artist?

In his days as a youth in Milwaukee, Adam started out in Life as a skateboarder. But unlike many who ride skateboards or participate in activities, which prior to the X-Games, were considered Counter Culture, Adam didnʻt drink or do drugs.

“At one point I belonged to a Straight Edge band.” The Straight Edge reference being to the movement that one current WWE Pro Wrestling Champion, CM Punk, is a part of, and a lifestyle that involves no alcohol or drugs.

Shortly before getting involved in that movement, Adam was an Anti Racist Skinhead, protesting the ignorance of discrimination firsthand. Along the way, with the different hats he wore, Adam got into graffiti, his natural ability and love for art finding their expression.

From the spray of the paint to the buzz of that tattoo machine, Adam found his home in tattooing and has not looked back since.

Like many other Paths in Life, Adamʻs has been unique. Maybe your Path will weave in with his the next time you are looking for that tattoo in Hawaii… Speaking of which, isnʻt it time you got a new tattoo?

Weʻll see you at 434 Ena Rd…

Custom Tattoo Stories: Circles

In Polynesian tradition (and probably other places), the idea of closing circles means that something has come to a close.  In some parts of the world, people tattoo a circle for the same reason.  Our tattoo shop in Waikiki, 434 Tattoo has tattooed circles, squares, pegs, lions, and tigers, and bears oh my!

Hawaii Tattoo Artist Andy Burley is a big fan of The Lion King, which talks about The Circle of Life as well.

But all jokes aside, this custom tattoo story by Tattoo Adam, has a personal note to it…

“Some years back when I was still tattooing in Las Vegas,” Tattoo Adam begins, “a customer of mine came in and he wanted a series of circles, the story behind it had to do with the different circles in Life.  It was based on something that he believed…

“He was the owner of a famous nightclub in Las Vegas and he told me that I should read this book that described this philosophy that he subscribed to in Life based on the Circles one goes through as they Journey in Life.”  Adam continues.

Shortly after getting tattooed, the gentlemen went on a trip with his girlfriend and another couple in Florida.  While driving, they got into an accident, driving into water, and this customer passed as well as the girlfriend in the other couple.

“It was weird when I heard about that, one of each couple, one man, one woman, both passed away.  I almost feel like maybe by getting that, it jinxed him.  It was sad because he had everything going for him and was very successful in his life.”

Resident Mystic/Editor JMAW has this to say on the subject: “When a circle is closed, it can mean completion.  While we can never know why someone goes when they do, especially in tragic and unexpected ways at a young age, perhaps comfort can be found in that this man had honored the Circles of Life that his Soul was here to process.”

We wish you well Buddy, wherever you are…

Tattooed in Hawaii Q & A: How Safe are the Inks?

There is a question that comes up from time to time and it is logical why people would ask it:

How safe are the inks?

For newcomers getting tattooed in Hawaii (or wherever for that matter), safety is a very reasonable concern.  Our Honolulu Tattoo Artists undergo extensive training, testing, are both certified and licensed by the State of Hawaii Department of Health, and are more than willing to answer any questions about safety or any questions about your new tattoo for that matter.

Which brings us back to the issue of how safe is tattoo ink?

Today, tattoo ink is very safe because there are expiration dates, all ingredients are listed on the newer inks, and companies keep track of each batch.  For example,Eternal Tattoo Supplyis sure to have a lot number in addition to the previously mentioned items that are listed.  All ingredients in the ink are required to be approved by the Health Administration and meet safety standards in accordance with various laws.

This wasnʻt always the case though, as ink formerly had Mercury in it.  In time, people had reactions to the Mercury and things have since changed.

One other thing that has changed relating to ink: in the past, Custom Tattoo Artists could by bags of powder and mix their own inks.  If you mixed your ink properly, it could last you a lifetime!  Supply companies wised up along the way and realized they could make more money by selling only the ink it would seem.

Thank you for your questions and concerns about tattooing and safety.  Be sure to visit us online and in the shop for any other concerns and to learn more about the custom tattoo process!  Our tattoo studio in Waikiki is located at 434 Ena Road and we are open 7 days a week from 10a to 10p by appointment but walk-ins are always welcome!

Tattoos in Hawaii: Free Touch Ups For Life

One of Tattoo Adam‘s first customers in Hawaii, back when he helped build the walls at another Waikiki Tattoo studio Tattoolicious, stopped in recently to get a little touch up work done. The image below is a before shot of a tiki tattoo of Ku.

20120811-173242.jpg

This tattoo was done about 12 years ago, with the sun being the greatest enemy of a tattoo, and the weather as beautiful as it is in Hawaii, it is easy to understand how this may have faded. But fear not, it is not guaranteed that your new ink, that you sat however long for, will fade, so long as you keep it covered and use sunscreen while out in the sun. Here is one look after the touchups:

“The higher the SPF the better (to protect your new tattoo).” According to Adam, when it comes to taking care of a tattoo. When you get tattooed in Honolulu with any of our Hawaii Tattoo artists at 434 Tattoo, consultations are free and touchups are also free for life. This customer liked the touchups so much he even decided to pay extra to get some color to go with it! Here is one more shot of after Tattoo Adam did what he does best:

434 Tattoo on Location: Hawaii Tattoo Convention

20120808-191318.jpg

The First Tattoo Convention in Hawaii took place last weekend and local, mainland, as well as international tattooists and tattoo enthusiasts gathered to partake in the festivities. From live tattoo booths to tattoo contests, clothing to cars, even seminars were popping off, this event had a little bit of everything.

Held in Hawaii’s Blaisdell Arena, the 434 Tattoo Ohana, went down to see what the hype was all about. We tried to head down at 600p HST but we kept having people walk in who were looking to get tattooed in Waikiki. At about 930p, we closed shop and made our way down.

From this Editor’s perspective, the venue was huge and laid out very well. Having attended numerous events from car shows, Old Super Brawl fight cards even WWE wrestling back when it still was the WWF, the organizer’s of the event did a pretty good job of for lack of a better word organizing it.

One of the coolest things to see was live traditional Polynesian tattooing session (pictured below). Hawaii is in Polynesia and tattooing has been a large part of the Hawaiian culture ever since, ever since as Fokai likes to say.

An LA tattoo artist, who is well-reviewed and getting a lot of online buzz, ‘Norm Will Rise’, was in the house as well demonstrating his unique brand of lettering and style. If you look for his Instagr.am you may or may not even find a couple graffiti tagsthat he did while out here.

You don’t have to go to LA though for your ink, just stay on the island and look to get tattooed in Honolulu. Our multi-time award winning studio, 434 Tattoo, led by Tattoo Adam have got you all covered…

With ink!
