Recently Tattoo Adam made his way to Yokohama, Japan, to get work done on himself by legendary Japanese Tattoo Artist, Horiyoshi III. The picture above shows Adam as he is going through the experience of getting tattooed himself while there.
“The way I see it, if you dish out that kind of pain, you have to be able to understand it yourself.” He remarks as we go through the process, watching sped-up versions of the experience in Adam’s Waikiki Tattoo Studio, 434 Tattoo. A total of six sessions later and we have an image that Horiyoshi III drew up in the past that Adam wished to add to the piece.
“My goal this year is to be suited.” Adam comments as he enters his 22nd year in the tattoo industry. “The fourth session was the most intense.” He says going back to the tattoo session with Horiyoshi. “He went over the same place.” He points to the fine details of the figure’s hair that Horiyoshi created on his torso.
“You learn more and more the correct approach on how to do a big tattoo.” He says with a reverence for the Master Tattooist and Teacher. To this day, Horiyoshi spends time drawing and painting, ever perfecting a craft that he is already considered one-of-a-kind and a true Legend.
When asked how he learned of Horiyoshi’s work, Adam replied, “I saw his work in of a magazine while still an apprentice in Milwaukee.” Adam later sought out the Japanese Tattooist and the rest as they say, is history…
